The Friday night football in Spain this week comes from the Coliseum. Getafe take on Elche in a meeting of two teams who play very different brands of football.
Almost a decade has now passed since Pepe Bordalás first took charge at Getafe, when the club was languishing near the bottom of the Segunda División. While he did briefly depart to take charge of Valencia in 2021, Los Azulones have quickly rediscovered their old identity since turning back to the now 61-year-old in 2023.
They play a defensive brand of football that is rarely easy on the eye. They rank second-lowest in La Liga for both average possession and shots per game. Their xG tally of just 9.2 is also the worst record in the Spanish top flight.
However, Bordalás' style continues to get results. A strong defensive record has helped them to five victories already this term, with midfielder Luis Milla almost always the main source of creativity. Getafe are in seventh place as it stands, and another win here would further boost their surprise European credentials.
The hosts do head into this match following back-to-back 1-0 defeats. They were narrowly beaten in Mallorca just prior to the international break, while only a late own goal from Domingos Duarte denied them a point in their derby with Atlético Madrid last time out.
As for Elche, their approach is to keep the ball on the ground and build from the back. They've completed 87% of their passes, the third-highest figure in La Liga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. They faced the latter last weekend in an entertaining game at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero.
The newly promoted side twice took the lead. Former Real Madrid youth team players Aleix Febas and Álvaro Rodríguez both scored excellent goals against their old club, but Los Franjiverdes ultimately had to make do with a 2-2 draw.
They've had some tough fixtures in recent weeks, but a six-game winless run in La Liga may start to concern Eder Sarabia if that streak continues to grow. The fear may be that opposing teams eventually figure out how best to combat their bold approach, which has largely seen them compete back in the Spanish top flight to date.
Another concern is the disparity between their home and away results. They've outplayed most opponents and remain unbeaten at the Martínez Valero. However, Elche are yet to win away in the league this term, and have lost their last three on the road.
Team News:
We're getting to that stage in the season when a physical Getafe side tends to start picking up suspensions. They'll be missing centre-back Abdel Abqar and midfielder Mario Martín here, with the duo both collecting their fifth yellow cards last weekend. Only five other players in La Liga have hit that mark.
Kiko Femenía and Álex Sancris could be drafted in to replace those two, with a shift to a slightly more adventurous system possible in a more favourable fixture. 18-year-old Davinchi is their only other absentee, with the defender out with a long-term injury.
As for Elche, Sarabia doesn't have many reasons to make changes following such a spirited display against Real Madrid last Sunday. However, Víctor Chust did see red in the final minutes of that game, so Pedro Bigas ought to earn a recall in central defence. Winger Josan Ferrández is the only injury doubt for the visitors.
Álvaro is pushing for a start up front, following the impact he made off the bench last time out. The 21-year-old was on loan at Getafe last season, but only scored twice in 22 league appearances, so this may be another fixture where he has something of a point to prove.
Getafe vs Elche Predicted Lineups
- Getafe: Soria, Iglesias, Djene, Duarte, Rico, Femenia, Munoz, Arambarri, Juanmi, Liso, Mayoral
- Elche: Pena, Fort, Nunez, Affengruber, Bigas, Valera, Diangana, Aguado, Febas, Mir, Silva
Getafe are the 6/5 favourites heading into this game. You can back the Draw at 2/1, while Elche are priced at 11/4 to record their first away victory of the season in La Liga.
Matches at the Coliseum tend to be tight affairs. If you're expecting that trend to continue, you can back Under 1.5 goals at 11/8, while Both teams to score - No is priced at 4/7.
After causing plenty of problems for Real Madrid last time out, Elche are on offer at 4/6 to score over 0.5 goals in the game. You can back them to win either half at 7/5, while the hosts are on offer at 7/10 in the same market.
This is not a fixture where there are loads of obvious goal threats. Borja Mayoral should lead the line for Getafe, and he's priced at 4/1 to score first, and 7/4 to score anytime. Adrián Liso has also netted three times for the South Madrid club so far this season, although all of those goals came back in August. The 20-year-old is priced at 9/4 to score anytime.
With Álvaro and André Silva potentially competing for one place, Rafa Mir may be the best option in terms of an Elche goalscorer bet. The ex-Valencia forward has scored four times so far, and he's on offer at 11/2 to score first, and 12/5 to score anytime.
Getafe vs Elche Stats
- BTTS has landed in 83% of Elche's away matches so far this season in La Liga.
- Only Kylian Mbappe (23) has had more Shots on Target than Elche's Rafa Mir (18).
Getafe vs Elche Prediction 1 - Half-time result - Draw @ 9/10
This is a meeting of two teams who have very distinctive styles of play, and the opening stages may be about trying to feel one another out. Elche are likely to dominate the ball, but they may struggle to get much change out of a Getafe defence that has only conceded once in the opening hour at home this term.
Their recent home derbies against both Atlético and Real Madrid were goalless until the 80th minute. They might not show quite as much respect to this week's opposition, but we're still likely to see the home team set up with a back five, and another cagey opening half could be on the cards. I'm backing the Draw in the Half-Time Result market at 9/10.
Getafe vs Elche Prediction 2 - Under 2.5 goals & Most corners - Getafe @ 6/4
As well as their big two neighbours, Getafe have also already hosted each of the current bottom three. Even those games were relatively tight, with their 2-1 victory over Girona the highest-scoring league match at the Coliseum so far this season.
Not since the opening day of the campaign in Vigo, when they could still count on the services of Christantus Uche, have Getafe created 1.0 xG or more in a league match.
However, they do carry a threat from set-piece situations thanks to the quality of Milla's deliveries. They look good to win the corner count in this encounter, given Elche are averaging only 2.67 corners won and 6.33 corners conceded on their travels in La Liga.
With a low-scoring contest expected, I'm using the Bet Builder to back Under 2.5 goals and Most corners - Getafe at 6/4.
