Football Bet of the Day: In-form Posh host league leaders

Premier League football returns this weekend after an enthralling international break that saw Scotland book their place at the World Cup with a dramatic late win over Denmark. Meanwhile, England got two more wins and the Republic of Ireland secured a spot in the play-offs with a last-gasp win over Hungary.
It’s been a fun week so far then, but club action is calling me once again - below you can find Thursday’s Football Bet of the Day.

Peterborough United vs Stockport County Odds
League 1 leaders Stockport County are in action on Thursday night as they travel to struggling Peterborough United (20:00, Sky Sports Football). Both of these teams had the weekend off due to the international break, and the Hatters will be keen to get back to winning ways having lost 3-0 at home to Luton Town in their last league outing.
Dave Challinor’s side have been superb over the last five seasons, getting promoted or finishing in the play-offs in each of those campaigns. Their lowest finish has been fourth in that time and this club is once again fighting it out at the top of the table, having lost on penalties in the play-offs last term.
This time, they will want to secure a top-two finish and return to the Championship after 22 years away. It does feel like a matter of time now before they get there, and they’ve been strong this term, scooping 28 points from 15 games. That’s not quite the usual two-points-per-game that you’d expect from the league leaders, but they aren’t far off that pace.
Football Bet of the Day Stats
- Stockport have the best away record in the league
- Peterborough have won three of their last four in all competitions
Interestingly, it has been their astonishing away form that has carried them to the summit, rather than their showings at Edgeley Park. Fourteen points on the road from seven outings, and just one defeat in that time means they have the best away record in the third tier - with their home form ranking 11th.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s opponents Peterborough have been pretty dismal this term. They’ve only got seven points from seven home games this season, sit 23rd in the league and are in serious relegation danger. They’ve shown improvement since Luke Williams replaced Darren Ferguson, winning two of their last three in the league, while they also beat Cardiff City in the FA Cup.
That does concern me slightly, however, I’m a massive believer in Stockport and the squad they possess. Posh will want to continue their rise, but I just think the league leaders will put down a serious marker on Thursday night and maintain their strong away form. Away win.
