After Tottenham’s defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, Thomas Frank and his players will now be aiming for midweek joy in Monaco. The North London outfit are unbeaten in the Champions League this season with a win and a draw to date and will be keen to further extend that record on Wednesday.

Standing in their way of further progress up the Champions League ladder are their Ligue 1 opponents. An outfit that is still looking for its first European win of the season and although they lost to Club Brugge on Matchday 1, they earned a spirited draw with Manchester City last time out. Let's get into this preview and my top Monaco vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions...

Team News

With Monaco quickly becoming the home of ex-Premier League players, two of their summer signings find themselves out injured. First, ex Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is unavailable due to a thigh injury that was picked up in training 10 days ago – his long awaited return to football hitting another snag.

While the second absence is more galling for the player involved. Bad news for Eric Dier who misses out on the opportunity to face the club where he spent a decade, the defender will have to watch from the sidelines due to a muscle injury that rules him out until mid-November at the earliest.

As Tottenham make the trip to Monte Carlo on Wednesday, it is almost easier to name a team of injured players rather than those that are currently fit. Injury woes for Thomas Frank in midweek as no less than 10 players are either ruled out or have a question mark next to their name in terms of fitness.

This means enforced changes up and down the field of play for Spurs and with doubts over Cristian Romero's availability due to the injury he picked up before Sunday's home league defeat to Aston Villa, the expectation is that Kevin Danso will instead be installed at centre back on Wednesday.

Monaco vs Tottenham Hotspur Stats

  • Monaco have not won any of their last four matches in all competitions - one loss followed by three successive draws.
  • Tottenham have not lost any of their last nine European matches (all competitions).

The Draw @ 13/5

When looking at Monaco's form this season, it is fair to say that they have been largely solid rather than spectacular. Already saying goodbye to previous manager Adi Hutter, it is now down to Sébastien Pocognoli to try and find a bit more flair with the attacking talent at his disposal.

Add Monaco's safety first approach these past few weeks to Tottenham's lengthy list of absentees and this may be a game where both Pocognoli and counterpart Thomas Frank feel its safer to not trade too many punches. A draw not the worst result for Spurs on the road. A draw at 13/5 far from the worst price.

Under 2.5 goals @ 5/4

Leaning to the first tip above, a draw usually means a low scoring affair and therefore, it gives us scope to also target the over/under market. With confidence in the draw, you then ask yourself whether it will be 2-2 or above. With so much talent unavailable, I do not think it heads that way.

Not only that, but we do not necessarily need the draw to cover off this bet. It may well be a game that is simply secured a single goal (or two) in a home or away win. Think of this as the backup plan if the draw goes awry. Think of it is as the bonus if the two sides cancel each other out completely.
