Lucky 15 Tips: Fascinating puzzles to solve at Southwell

Friday's racing is action-packed with a great spread available across the UK and Ireland. For our Lucky 15 tips I'm heading to Southwell for their nine-race late afternoon/early evening bonanza on the Tapeta, kicking in at 16:00.
Billy Loughnane's got a lovely book of rides and it's short-odds about him appearing below in our list of selections. Enjoy!
Lucky 15 Tips - Friday, October 3
Southwell
- 16:00 - Kingdom Of Stars @ 10/3
- 18:15 - Shamacid @ 15/8
- 19:45 - Piperstown @ 10/3
- 20:15 - Night Tara @ 11/10
*Odds correct as of the time of publication
16:00 - Kingdom Of Stars @ 10/3
Staying handicappers going just over 2m in our opener - and a Tom Ward-trained four-year-old gelding who's registered one success thus far from 10 lifetime spins.
Kingdom Of Stars readily stayed this far last time at Kempton, and his issue was being rather outpaced at the business end. Southwell has always struck me as a stiffer test than most all-weather venues - not as attritional as the old Fibresand days of course, but a tough old pull to the line nevertheless, so that one-paced complexion noted in Surrey last time could be less telling at this venue.
The excellent PJ McDonald has been booked to do the pushing and it's a ride he'll enjoy greatly I reckon. Races off a mark of 75, only a pound higher than his last win in July - at 2m.
18:15 - Shamacid @ 15/8
I tipped this one up the other day and the three-year-old Shaman colt looked to not quite last out the 6f trip after racing prominently.
Shamacid intriguingly steps UP in trip tonight to 7f, and there's got to be an element of hit and hope about whether it will suit - but well worth a stab I reckon.
This is a novice stakes heat and among those who have an official mark there's precious little in it on what they've achieved so far. The selection gets the brilliant Billy Loughnane up top for the first time and perhaps a waiting game tactics-wise will be employed?
Fascinating to see how they go about the task in hand as the horse obviously has talent (two seconds and a third in his last three, close-up each time). This is only career start number five too, so nothing is remotely set in stone yet.
Here's hoping Billy can work out a great trip and have a little bit saved in the locker for the business end.
19:45 - Piperstown @ 10/3
No apologies for engaging Mr Loughnane once again, as he gets the riding assignment on board a Kevin Frost-trained four-year-old No Nay Never gelding, who's encouragingly won here before.
Piperstown has four successes from 16 career starts, but the last of those was back in February at Wolves, off 51. He's slipped to a very tempting-looking mark of 49, and after fading late here over 6f two weeks ago he gets a drop back to 5f.
Rather as with Shamacid I get the feeling this is all about timing, rhythm, finesse; working out a great trip. Two examinations of Billy and his considerable talents that will be intriguing to behold - and if anyone can, he's surely up there with who you'd want on your side.
Piperstown must bounce back from ordinary efforts the last twice but on this kind of mark it will be no surprise whatsoever, especially under this jockey (who's ridden him once before), if he gets competitive again. A glorious puzzle.
20:15 - Night Tara @ 11/10
Another staying test, this time at 1m 6f, to round off the card.
Night Tara is with Sir Mark Prescott at HQ, and will be ridden by his long-time retained pilot Luke Morris. This is a three-year-old Night Of Thunder filly who's registered two wins so far from her eight runs, and arrives here in superbly consistent order.
She gets to run off the same mark (67) as when beaten 1.25l here 10 days ago, and she made life a little problematical by ducking right as the boxes opened. She was picked off eventually at the death but as that was over 2m-and-change the drop down a couple of furlongs could be just the job.
She goes well here, always a big factor, and is quietly progressive. Another little step forward will make her very hard to beat.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £170 for your total £7.50 stake.
