Strasbourg vs Marseille Prediction: Little to separate the sides

RC Strasbourg will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run against Olympique Marseille to seven games on Friday (19:45 BST, Ligue 1 Pass), when the two teams meet at the Stade de la Meinau.

Strasbourg’s injury list includes Max Oyedele (muscle), Sebastian Nanasi (shoulder), Abakar Sylla (knock), Saidou Sow and Julio Enciso (both knee).

Rabby Nzingoula will serve the final game of his suspension on Friday, but Lucas Hogsberg is back from the one-match ban he served in last Sunday’s 3-2 win at Paris FC.

For Marseille, Geoffrey Kondogbia (calf) and Hamed Junior Traore (thigh) miss out.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi may consider naming an unchanged starting XI, following Monday’s 1-0 triumph over reigning league champions Paris Saint-Germain, although the Italian may decide to revert to a four-man defence, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Angel Gomes eyeing returns from the off.

Strasbourg are 12/5, or a 29.4% chance, to rack up a third consecutive Ligue 1 victory, while Marseille are 1/1 (50%) to do the same, with the draw priced at 13/5.

Marseille finished runners-up to champions PSG in last season's Ligue 1, with Strasbourg ending the campaign in seventh, eight points behind De Zerbi's side.

However, there wasn't much between them in either head-to-head, with Strasbourg edging their home game 1-0 last September, before drawing 1-1 at the Stade Velodrome in January.

Five of the last six meetings have finished in score draws, and with both teams making positive starts to the current campaign, I can see another 1-1 or 2-2 on Friday.

Strasbourg have won four of their opening five fixtures (L1), while Marseille have triumphed three times (L2), and should take a lot of confidence from their win over PSG earlier in the week. The hosts have scored in their last nine league games dating back to last season, while Marseille have struck in three of their last four.

Strasbourg's leading marksman last season, Emanuel Emegha, isn't too popular with supporters these days, with controversy sparked by his pre-agreed move to Chelsea.

However, the 22-year-old is doing his talking on the pitch, netting in each of his last three appearances, including one in the 3-2 win at Paris FC last time out.

Emegha struck 14 Ligue 1 goals last season and is on two from three matches this term, while he also bagged a brace in the second leg of his side's Uefa Conference League play-off tie with Brondby last month.

The Dutch forward, who is the club captain at Strasbourg, could return to the starting XI this week, after making his return from a two-game absence against Paris FC, and looks a nice price to score against Marseille, as he did in the last head-to-head in January.
