Nap of the Day: Kody should B hard to beat at Beverley

Nap of the day with owen mcmahon 2

There's no getting away from it, last week was a bitterly-disappointing one for this column. Despite a couple of near-misses, the number of winners was a big, fat zero. Swings and roundabouts.

Fingers crossed for a better week, starting for Nap of the Day purposes at Beverley on Tuesday.

If acting on the ground, which is soft (heavy in places) at time of publication, I expect KODY B to take all the beating at Beverley on Tuesday.

Craig Lidster's two-year-old, who fetched £35k at a breeze-up earlier this year, went close at Chester the other week on just his second-ever start, and I think he's been found an outstanding opportunity to get off the mark at the third time of asking.

He finished within a length of Brian Ellison's Mossvale Diva, who followed up at Redcar just four days later, on the Roodee, which is a smart piece of form in the context of this race.

Crucially, that defeat means the Dark Angel colt escapes a penalty in the East Riding of Yorkshire - something that can't be said for his main market rival, Ironwill.

Stuart Williams' runner beat a small but select field at Brighton on the first day of the month and as a result is burdened by a seven-pound penalty. He also has to concede a further two pounds - so nine in total - to the selection, per the conditions of the race.

I doubt Ironwill, whose favourable draw should be negated somewhat by conditions, is nine pounds better than Kody B. Not at the moment, anyway.

Nigel Tinkler's Believeinmenow is, according to the betting, the other danger to the selection. He showed promise on his racecourse debut at Thirsk back in May but failed to build on it since.

His latest run in a Class 2 handicap at York off a mark of 73 was, I suppose, a return to something like, but more is needed to win this.

As far as I'm concerned, there's little to get excited about regarding the other six runners - although unexposed two-year-olds can surprise you. Hopefully that's not the case here...

The drop from six to five furlongs for Kody B would concern me on lively ground, but in these conditions it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, that ability to stay further should come in handy.

To add further optimism to the cause, Lidster is operating at a 20% strike rate over the last 14 days, courtesy of two winners from 10 runners - and jockey Sam James has ridden as many winners from eight rides (25% strike rate).
