Sri Lanka off to a flyer
Any fears that the recent series defeat to Bangladesh would play on Sri Lanka’s mind were put to bed as they brushed their Group B rivals aside on Saturday, winning by six wickets with 32 balls to spare.
What stood out was not just their spin strength but the way their seamers took charge with the new ball. Dushmantha Chameera and Chamika Karunaratne were both impressive, bowling back-to-back wicket maidens, leaving Bangladesh on 0-2. The returning Wanindu Hasaranga also showed his class, picking up two wickets, helping restrict Bangladesh to just 139.
With the bat, Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara made easy work of the bulk of the chase, scoring 50 and 46 respectively and all-in-all it was a good day at the office for SL.
Hong Kong showing improvement
Hong Kong opened their campaign with a heavy loss to Afghanistan but they showed far greater resilience against Bangladesh on Thursday, posting 143, thanks to key contributions from captain Yasim Murtaza, Zeeshan Ali and, in particular, Nizakat Khan who scored a fluent 42 at better than a-run-a-ball.
While their bowling still lacks penetration, HK were able to make Bangladesh work harder than expected, taking the contest in the 18th over. That improvement suggests they’re acclimatising to conditions in the UAE and could potentially frustrate the higher-ranked opponent.
Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong Predicted Lineups:
- Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera, Kamil Mishara, Dasun Shanaka, Charith Asalanka (c), Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera
- Hong Kong: Zeeshan Ali (wk), Anshuman Rath, Babar Hayat, Nizakat Khan, Kalhan Challu, Kinchit Shah, Yasim Murtaza (c), Aizaz Khan, Ehsan Khan, Ayush Shukla, Ateeq Iqbal
Key Odds
With Hong Kong certainly not disgracing themselves so far, some punters might fancy a flier at the match odds of 20/1. Anything can happen in a T20, especially at a ground like Dubai where there is a significant bias to the chasing team, with dew a massive factor. We won't be getting involved, however. Sri Lanka are 1/100 for the record.
Nissanka is 11/4 to top score again for Sri Lanka, with opening partner Kusal Mendis at 14/5 and Kamil Mishara a 4/1 shot. Zeeshan Ali and Anshy Rath share favouritism for Hong Kong at 7/2, with Nizakat Khan a 4/1 shot to go back-to-back.
On the bowling front, the market can't split the Sri Lanka wicket takers from the Bangladesh game, with Chameera, Karunaratne and Hasaranga all trading at 3/1. For Hong Kong, right-arm seamer Shukla is the 3/1 favourite, with Ateeq Iqbal - who picked up 2/14 last time out - and Ehsan Khan both 10/3.

Best Bets:
With a straightforward victory for Sri Lanka on the cards and batters at the top of the order expected to dominate, there's no real edge in the top bowler or top batter markets, but there are a couple of runs lines to attack here.
We'll back the classy Nissanka to pick up where he left off last time out and score over 24.5 for Sri Lanka and, for Hong Kong, we'll take Babar Hayat to beat his line of 14.5. He looked HK's best batter in scoring 39 against Afghanistan and while he only got 14 against Bangladesh, he looked in decent touch, clearing the ropes early on.
