Burnley vs Liverpool Prediction: 300/1 goalscorer pick!

Liverpool have won three out of three so far in the Premier League, and they finally got their man before the transfer window slammed shut as Alexander Isak made the £125m move from Newcastle United. 

They travel to Turf Moor on Sunday (14:00, Sky Sports Main Event), looking to keep up their perfect record. Below you can find my Burnley vs Liverpool predictions.

Team News

Midfielder Florentino Luis joined Burnley from Benfica and Scott Parker will have to assess how ready he is to feature in the Premier League. On a positive note, the manager said: “All players have come back fit and healthy from the international break which is positive. Beyond that, not much has changed in terms of availability.”

The Clarets lost late at Old Trafford before the break, but we could see an unchanged XI from that game. Kyle Walker, Maxime Esteve, Hjalmar Ekdal and Quilindschy Hartman will hope to get a clean sheet, with Lesley Ugochukwu hoping to provide some defensive stability in midfield against the champions. Lyle Foster found the net and will lead the line, while Jaidon Anthony has enjoyed a great start to the season with two goals and one assist, and will be a danger from the left wing. 

Premier League Odds

For Liverpool, Curtis Jones is unavailable, with Arne Slot revealing that the England man got a knock during the win over Arsenal. The man of the summer, Isak, was an unused substitute in Sweden’s 2-2 draw with Slovenia and only played 18 minutes off the bench in Monday’s shock 2-0 loss to Kosovo - so he is likely to start on the bench here.

On the positive side of things, Jeremie Frimpong has returned to training after missing the last two matches with a hamstring injury and Ibrahima Konate shrugged off a late scare against Arsenal to play two full games for France.

Burnley vs Liverpool Odds

Burnley are priced at 17/2 to win this game, with Liverpool the favourites at 1/3. The away team have an implied win probability of 75% while a draw is available at 9/2.

Over 2.5 goals can be selected at 8/15, BTTS is 10/11 and Isak is the favourite to score first at 11/4.

Burnley +2 handicap @ 5/6

Now, I know this selection may annoy my Liverpool-supporting colleague Nick Ware, but I do think it is the right way to go. Burnley have been pretty competitive so far this season, only getting blown away 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day. 

Since then they’ve beaten Sunderland 2-0 in their only home league game, beaten Derby County 2-1 in the Carabao Cup and then lost with practically the final kick against Manchester United. They are going to have to put in a good performance to avoid a hammering, but I think they can do so, even if they end up losing. 

Liverpool may have won three from three, but they haven’t been that impressive at all. Bournemouth took advantage of some defensive frailties before losing 4-2 at Anfield, Newcastle fought back from 2-0 down with 10 men before losing late on and then Arsenal weren’t brave enough to put them to the sword. I think there are some defensive concerns about Liverpool and if Burnley can score, this selection will be very strong. 

I think 1/3 is too short for an away win, so I’ll back Burnley +2, which means even if they lose by one goal, our bet will be settled as a winner.
