Lucky 15 Tips: Day 2 at Donny – good thing in the Cup?

It's Day 2 of the Betfred St Leger Festival at Doncaster. Sensational racing, and the obvious vehicle once again for our Lucky 15 tips. We began yesterday with two 6/1 winners so dare I say it - we're in decent fettle!

The eight-race card kicks in at 13:15, and has arguably the Doncaster Cup as its highlight. Enjoy another brilliant afternoon of sport.

13:50 -  Cattulus @ 3/1

Listed action, over 7f, for two-year-olds.

One of the more experienced colts in the line-up and certainly one who's shown bags of ability is Charlie Appleby's Catullus. Three runs to date for this son of Invincible Spirit and a degree of symmetry form-wise, going from third to first in the space of around a month in July and August.

That win when last seen four weeks ago was a facile success at Yarmouth, barely breaking sweat to win a little maiden by a yawning 7.5l. He looks to be on the upgrade and well worth a shot at this level.

Will Buick is of course in the plate and it could be a good day for Godolphin, with several fancies having made the trip to Town Moor from Newmarket.

14:25 - Military Code @ 6/1

Talking of which - here's another for the boys in blue, Appleby, Buick et al, in a Group 2 heat (The Flying Childers).

Two-year-olds once again, and a Wootton Bassett colt out of an Invincible Spirit mare. Military Code has already won two races from his six starts and when last seen at York 20 days ago was denied by just a head in the Listed Roses Stakes.

He steps up in grade but last time was a career-best and he's got a couple of potential fancy entries in the G2 Mill Reef and G1 Middle Park. He'll need to improve in all likelihood but that's entirely possible.

Superb contest with some stellar yards involved.

15:00 - Sweet William @ 11/8

Bullish statement alert - this is my idea of the best bet of the whole meeting.

Sweet William has been keeping some very exalted and demanding company of late, rubbing shoulders with the likes of the exceptional Trawlerman, Scandinavia, Rebel's Romance, etc. He won this G2 Doncaster Cup last term and can do so again.

These are far calmer waters, and to be fair the horse has been in terrific nick without being able to get his head in front. He's game, genuine, consistent and jockey Rab Havlin knows him well.

Expect the six-year-old Sea The Stars gelding to follow the pace before asserting in the closing stages for a richly-deserved success - fingers crossed.

16:10 - Classic Cuvee @ 11/4

From the proven quality of a veteran star to the immense promise of a once-raced two-year-old.

Classic Cuvee is in the hands of trainer Roger Varian at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket. The daughter of Siyouni ran second to Zanthos (3l) in a hot HQ maiden 34 days ago (7f) and the third that day has come out and taken a similarly well-endowed Sandown heat.

She's entered in the G1 Fillies' Mile in October and has an eye-catching Racing Post Rating of 105. While there's precious little form to go on and plenty of big yards in opposition it's not hard to see Classic Cuvee making the anticipated improvement for that outing, and passing this 7f test with flying colours.

By way of additional confidence, the fact that champion Oisin Murphy has been booked to do the steering further emphasises her prospects of success.

I can feel a little Sweet William/Classic Cuvee double being placed, too ...
