After a profitable opening column, Dan Thomas returns with the best betting angles as he brings us his Bangladesh vs Hong Kong Asia Cup predictions…

Momentum with Bangladesh

Bangladesh arrive in Abu Dhabi in confident mood after a hectic but successful July  schedule that featured their first-ever T20I series win on Sri Lankan soil, a landmark triumph against Pakistan as well as a win over the Netherlands.

In Sri Lanka, Tanzid Hasan's career-best 73 not out and Mahedi Hasan's 4 for 11 in the decider helped seal a 2-1 series win, while Litton Das finished as player of the series, compiling 114 runs across the three games.

Shakib Al Hasan has chipped in with steady middle-order contributions, while Rishad Hossain's wrist-spin continues to mark him out as a wicket-taking option.

Hong Kong go back to the well

Hong Kong come into this fixture bruised but battle-hardened, having been outclassed by Afghanistan in their opener in the brutal Abu Dhabi heat on Tuesday. The schedulers haven't done them any favours, making them play again on Thursday, before Sri Lanka have even played once.

The HK batting folded alarmingly as they were bowled out for 94, with nine players dismissed for single figures. The one bright spot was Babar Hayat, who top-scored with 39 and showed the resilience to stand up against elite spin. Anshy Rath, though dismissed cheaply, remains central to their hopes, while captain Yasim Murtaza will be looking for a much improved performance in the field after multiple drops against Afghanistan.

There is at least a sliver of historical encouragement; Hong Kong have faced Bangladesh once before in a T20I, and won that match at the 2014 World Cup.

Bangladesh vs Hong Kong Predicted Lineups

  • Bangladesh: Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Litton Das (c & wk), Towhid Hridoy,  Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Mahedi Hasan, Tanzim Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.
  • Hong Kong: Zeeshan Ali (wk), Anshy Rath, Babar Hayat, Nizakat Khan, Kalhan Challu,  Kinchit Shah, Yasim Murtaza (c), Aizaz Khan, Ayush Shukla, Ateeq Iqbal, Ehsan Khan.

Key Odds

It's 'same again' in the match odds with Hong Kong at 9/1 as they were against Afghanistan, with Bangladesh 1/25. The associate team showed a few flickers in the opener, but we can't see an upset here.

Tanzid Hasan and Das top the batter market for Bangladesh at 14/5 and 10/3 respectively, with Parvez Hossain Emon looking quite chunky at 7/2 given his position at the top of the order. Hayat is 3/1 to repeat his top scoring feats for Hong Kong, with Rath at 10/3 and Zeeshan a 7/2 shot.

With plenty of bowling options for Bangladesh, it's a wide open market, with no player shorter than 3/1, and the traders are also giving the Hong Kong bowlers an even chance, with three players at 10/3.

Best Bets:

We discussed the virtues of backing the top order when established sides play minnows in our Afghanistan vs Hong Kong preview and Afghan opener Sediq Atul duly stepped up to top score with an unbeaten 73; unfortunately we tipped his opening partner!

But we'll stick to the plan and back the in-form Tanzid Hasan to top score for Bangladesh at 10/3. The opener has adopted an aggressive approach in recent months, often looking to clear the ropes straight away, so we'll add in a 'home team first over six' at 3/1.
