Afghanistan striving for consistency

Rashid Khan's side come into the tournament off the back of a slightly erratic tri-series in the UAE, where they beat Pakistan convincingly in the group stage only to be heavily outplayed by the same opponents in the final.

The performance summed up a team still striving for consistency, but we know they can outgun big name opposition; victory over England in the Champions Trophy the most recent evidence.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz remains a destructive force at the top of the order with Ibrahim Zadran a steadier foil, while Azmatullah Omarzai has developed into a key all-round option. The experience of Mohammad Nabi and Karim Janat lends ballast through the middle overs.

With the ball, the experienced Khan is still the figurehead but the depth around him is growing, with Noor Ahmad - most recently seen in the colours of Manchester Originals - and Mujeeb Ur Rahman adding further spin menace.

A shot at the big time for Hong Kong

For Hong Kong, this is a chance to make a statement on the big stage after progressing through the Asia qualifiers. This is their fifth appearance in the Asia Cup although they are still looking for their maiden victory.

HK's recent cricket has been solid if not spectacular, capped by a spirited run to the final of the Asia-Pacific Champions Trophy earlier in the summer where they fell to Malaysia.

They are led by spin-bowling all-rounder Yasim Murtaza, who took over as captain this year and has picked up 70 wickets from 63 T20Is with his left-arm spin. Another bowler to watch out for is offspinner Ehsan Khan, Hong Kong's leading T20I wicket-taker with 127 from 94 games.

With the bat, the team will rely on Nizakat Khan, Babar Hayat, Anshy Rath and Zeeshan Ali to do the bulk of the scoring. Wicketkeeper and opener, Zeeshan, is the one most likely to take the game to the opposition.

Afghanistan vs Hong Kong Predicted Lineups

  • Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Sediqullah Atal, Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (c), Noor Ahmad, Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar, Fazalhaq Farooqi
  • Hong Kong: Zeeshan Ali (wk), Babar Hayat, Nizakat Khan, Anshy Rath, Martin Coetzee, Yasim Murtaza (c), Aizaz Khan, Nasrulla Rana, Ehsan Khan, Waqas Barkat, Benny Paras Singh

Key Odds

Afghanistan are unsurprisingly overwhelming favourites at 1/25, with Hong Kong out at 9/1 for anyone who fancies an opening day shock.

Gurbaz and Zadran are the joint favourites to top score for the Afghans, at 11/4, with Sediqullah Atal at 3/1. The traders aren't expecting anyone outside of the top three to have a sniff here, with likely no 4 Darwish Rasooli rated as an 11/2 shot. For Hong Kong, the classy left-handed Rath tops the market at 3/1, with openers Zeeshan and Hayat at 10/3.

With the ball, Khan is 11/4 favourite for Afghanistan, ahead of opening bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi at 3/1. For Hong Kong, skipper Murtaza tops the market at 3/1, with Aizaz Khan and Eshan Khan at 7/2.

Best Bets:

It's often tough to find an angle when a bigger nation takes on a minnow, especially ahead of the toss, but with a low score from Hong Kong very likely here, sticking to the top of the order for selections feels like the right strategy.

With that in mind, we'll back Gurbaz to top score for Afghanistan - he has a win rate of around 30% in this market, so there's a hint of value in the 11/4. And we'll take Farooqi to win top bowler honours at 3/1. Khan is probably favourite based on name here, as the left-arm pacer could blow away Hong Kong very early on with his ability to swing the ball both ways.
