Saturday Racing Tips: Owen’s best bets for Sprint Cup day

The big meeting this Saturday is at Haydock for the Sprint Cup, but there's top-class action from Ascot, Kempton, Navan, Thirsk, Stratford and Wolverhampton too.

I've had a good look through the cards and come up with a few Saturday racing tips, including an 8/11 Nap.

14:10 Ascot - Crown Of Oaks @ 8/11

If he's to line up for the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket later this month, CROWN OF OAKS simply has to be winning at Ascot on Saturday.

William Haggas' three-year-old son of Wootton Bassett is 10/1jf at Betfred for the £90k handicap, but he's currently only #94 in the list of entries. His mark of 85 needs raising, pronto.

It took four attempts for the half-brother to Royal Ascot winner English Oak to open his account, landing a handicap at Ayr in July off a mark of 79.

He won going away, by just under a length, after being made to wait for a gap at around the two-furlong pole. His performance can be marked up as far as I'm concerned, especially as it was his first start since a gelding operation earlier in the summer.

With that in mind, a six-pound rise looks more than manageable for this lightly-raced gelding who remains open to significant improvement. He ought to take the world of beating.

15:10 Kempton - Super Soldier @ 7/2

I think the two at the head of the market for the Sirenia Stakes - a Group 3 over six furlongs for two-year-old colts and geldings - are vulnerable. Especially Beckford's Folly, whose form is working out terribly.

For me, Karl Burke's SUPER SOLDIER is the one for money.

The son of Dark Angel is the highest-rated of the 10 runners, but he disappointed in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood the other month, hence the lack of love from our trading department.

However, I'm prepared to forgive that run. He looked the likely winner to my eye until the final furlong, when those on the stands side appeared to hold a serious advantage over those on the far side. The last three home were drawn in stalls 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Prior to Goodwood, the selection was just touched off in a Group 2 in Chantilly, which is a fine piece of form - one that suggests her three-figure rating is very fair. A replication of that could easily be enough to see him oblige at Kempton on Saturday.

16:07 Haydock - Jer Batt @ 10/3

We return to Haydock for my third and final interest on Saturday - JER BATT in this 0-105 handicap over the minimum trip of five furlongs.

David & Nicola Barron's five-year-old has fine form at Haydock and he's dropped to a mark of 89, which is just a couple of pounds higher than his last victory here.

Given he's bumped into the likes of American Affair (King Charles III winner), Roman Dragon (Chester specialist) and Jm Jungle (Qatar Stakes winner), I think it's generous that he's been dropped three pounds so far this term.

With the brilliant Tom Marquand booked to ride, he looks primed to make a bold bid in whatever conditions are thrown at him. He's incredibly versatile in that department.
