International football begins in earnest on Thursday, and despite the usual moaning about club football taking a break so early into the season, we have some pretty exciting World Cup qualifiers to look forward to.

Our focus is on the European qualifiers on Thursday, so let’s get stuck into our Football Accumulator Tips down below.

Football Accumulator Tips - Thursday, September 4

  • Belgium (A) to beat Liechtenstein with -3 handicap (19:45 BST)
  • Netherlands (H) to beat Poland (19:45 BST)

Wales (A) to beat Kazakhstan (15:00, BBC Wales)

Craig Bellamy’s Wales are back in action having picked up seven points from four games in the group so far. They travel to Kazakhstan looking to take another step towards the World Cup next summer, and things are looking good so far.

They almost nicked a point against Belgium last time out before a late Kevin De Bruyne winner saw the hosts win 4-3. A win here will be really important for Bellamy, and they’ve already beaten Kazakhstan 3-1 at home during this qualifying campaign. Kazakhstan lost 1-0 at home to North Macedonia in their last outing, and so I will back Bellamy’s side - featuring Brennan Johnson and Kieffer Moore, to find another victory.

Lithuania (H) to beat Malta (17:00)

Lithuania host Malta in a clash at the bottom of Group G, with both teams looking unlikely to challenge the qualification spots. Lithuania aren’t great, having only picked up two points from three games so far, following draws at home to Finland and away to Malta.

I’ll back them to go one better against Malta this time on home soil, based on the fact that Malta have failed to score in their last five matches in all competitions. They are ranked 168th in the world, and simply aren’t competitive enough to get anywhere near a World Cup anytime soon. I’ll back a home win in this one.

Belgium (A) to beat Liechtenstein with -3 handicap (19:45)

Belgium are obviously massive favourites to wipe the floor with Liechtenstein away from home, so let’s add a Belgium win with a -3 handicap to our handicap. Rudi Garcia took over from Domenico Tedesco at the start of 2025, and helped them overcome Ukraine over two legs to avoid relegation in the Nations League.

After a turbulent 2024 under the former boss, I’m expecting plenty of progress heading into the World Cup. The Golden Generation may be over, but Thibaut Courtois is now back in the squad, along with Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper and Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku. They should be able to wipe the floor with Liechtenstein, who lost 4-0 to Scotland in their last game and have lost their last six consecutive matches.

Netherlands (H) to beat Poland (19:45)

The Netherlands have made some decent progress in recent years and they will hope to continue that as they host Poland. These two are in the same group as Malta and Lithuania, and so it looks to be a three-horse race for the two automatic positions, between the Netherlands, Poland and Finland, who have picked up seven points so far to top the group.

These two are tied on six apiece, so this game takes on increased significance on Thursday. However, I am going to back the Dutch to take the win in this game, given they pushed Spain all the way in the Nations League and look to have a talented squad. Virgil van Dijk, Tijjani Reijnders and new Spurs players Xavi Simons should all show their class against a Poland outfit that has never truly been able to land a blow on one of the big boys.

Spain (A) to beat Bulgaria with -1 handicap (19:45)

Lamine Yamal, Dean Huijsen and Pedri are three of the finest young players in world football and they should have no trouble taking Bulgaria apart on Thursday. Spain lost the Nations League final on penalties to Portugal but have proven themselves to be arguably the best team in the world right now, even if they lost that final.

This group is yet to get underway due to Spain’s Nations League exploits, but Bulgaria lost 4-0 to Greece in their last outing and so Spain should be able to win this one comfortably.
