Horse Racing Tips: Oriole can bag Galway repeat

It’s the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday with a strong seven-race card coming from the Sussex Downs, including the Stewards’ Cup - one of the principal sprint handicaps of the British Flat season. The Galway Festival continues in Ireland, a mixed eight-race card attracting some big fields throughout. There’s also competitive supporting action from Newmarket and Thirsk, who host the Class 2 Summer Cup, whilst Doncaster stages a low-key fixture.

The action continues into the evening with seven-race cards at both Lingfield and Hamilton. Amongst our fancies is the Mark Fahey-trained Oriole, who has strong claims of going back-to-back in the concluding middle-distance handicap from Galway.

14:30 Goodwood - Term Of Endearment @ 3/1

William Haggas has yet to get a win out of Term Of Endearment since she arrived from Ireland at the start of the year, but she’s been running with credit and has plenty in her favour as she bids to repeat last season’s victory in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood.

The six-year-old enjoyed plenty of success for former trainer Henry De Bromhead, the highlight being her defeat of Andrew Balding’s Night Sparkle in this corresponding race last year.

Not beaten far in a Group 1 in France on her final outing for that yard, she’s twice been campaigned at 2m this year, a trip that clearly stretches her.

She ran within 1lb of her very best when beaten a head over his distance at York in May and a reproduction of that run should be good enough to see her go one better.

The progressive Goodie Two Shoes is the obvious danger.

16:00 Newmarket - Best Rate @ 6/1

Richard Hannon’s Best Rate remains a maiden on turf, but he’s been a model of consistency in the main and should be suited by a return to 7f on this stiff track.

The three-year-old built on his early promise when winning a Wolverhampton maiden over the winter and has remained in good form in handicaps since, running to Racing Post Ratings of 84 (twice), 87 and 88, including when pipped at the post at York in May.

He gave a good account behind the in-form Dutch Decoy over a mile at Newmarket last time, keeping on steadily from the back of the field, having been held up to get the trip. He’ll be able to be ridden more handily this time and this represents a slightly easier task.

18:05 Galway - Oriole @ 4/1

Few jockeys in Ireland are riding better than Dylan Browne McMonagle at present and it looks significant that he retains the partnership aboard Oriole, having finished a luckless third on the six-year-old last month.

The selection lost many lengths when walking out of the stalls on her return to this trip at Tramore 25 days ago, but she was in the process of making ground when stopped in her run over a furlong out, prior to running on for third near the finish.

That was an excellent effort in the circumstances and she’s been left on the same mark of 77, 1lb lower than when winning this corresponding race for a different yard last season.
