Luton vs AFC Wimbledon Prediction: Hatters to set their stall out in season opener

The new EFL campaign is finally upon us, and it all kicks off in League 1 with a Friday night meeting (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event) between division newcomers Luton Town and AFC Wimbledon. The Hatters have dropped down from the Championship after falling to back-to-back relegations, while the Dons beat Walsall 1-0 at Wembley in the League 2 play-off final in May to secure promotion to the third tier.
Below are my Luton vs AFC Wimbledon predictions, complete with all the latest team news and match odds, ahead of this season opener at Kenilworth Road.

Team News
Luton's most expensive recruit of the summer transfer window has been Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Keeley, who spent last season on loan in League 1 with Leyton Orient. The 22-year-old Irish shot-stopper is set to make his competitive debut for the Hatters on Friday, and he could be joined in the starting XI by fellow new arrivals Nakhi Wells, George Saville and Kal Naismith, the latter making his return to the club after ending his initial two-season stay in 2022.
However, head coach Matt Bloomfield won't be able to call upon injured quartet Elijah Adebayo (knee), Jacob Brown, Tom Lockyer (both ankle) and Teden Mengi (leg).
Neither Marvelous Nakamba nor Tahith Chong, meanwhile, both linked with Kenilworth Road exits, have played any part in Luton's pre-season friendlies, so it's unlikely the duo will be in Friday's squad for the visit of AFC Wimbledon.
Luton vs AFC Wimbledon Stats
- Luton kept five clean sheets in their final 12 Championship games in 24/25
- Town have only conceded once in five pre-season friendlies
- Ryan Johnson (WIM) received eight L2 yellows last season (three in last seven outings)
The Dons have strengthened their squad this week with the signings of striker Antwoine Hackford and defender Nathan Asiimwe, who have joined on a free and a loan, respectively. The duo add to the earlier arrivals of defender Steve Seddon and goalkeeper Nathan Bishop, both of whom are expected to start on Friday.
Boss Johnnie Jackson doesn't appear to have any injury issues heading to Bedfordshire, with Sam Hutchinson and Omar Bugiel both making their returns from problems in pre-season.
Luton Town vs AFC Wimbledon Odds
Luton, who are favourites to lift the League 1 title, are 1/2 to get their season underway with a win, implying a 66.7% probability of success, while AFC Wimbledon are 11/2, or a 15.4% chance, to record a fifth consecutive competitive victory, having ended the 2024/24 campaign with four 1-0 wins.
The draw is priced at 10/3, both teams to score at 10/11, and over 2.5 total goals at 8/11.
Wells (23/20) and Millenic Alli (6/4) lead the anytime goalscorer market, with Mathew Stevens (13/5) first up for the visitors.
Betfred are offering several price boosts for this game, including Luton HT/Luton FT, Luton 5+ Corners & AFC Wimbledon 30+ Booking Pts at 5/1, up from 4/1.
Price Boosts - Luton to Win to Nil, Luton Most Corners and Nakhi Wells to Score at Anytime @ 5/1 6/1
This contest pits the League 1 title favourites against the team most-fancied to suffer relegation. It's little surprise, given Luton finished 22nd in the Championship last season, above fellow relegated clubs Plymouth Argyle (23rd) and Cardiff City (24th), while AFC Wimbledon finished fifth in League 2, behind the promoted top three of Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale and Bradford City, and four points off fourth-placed Walsall, who they beat in the play-off final.
The Dons have seen their two wing-backs that famous day at Wembley, James Tilley and Josh Neufville, leave for Wycombe Wanderers and Bradford City, respectively, while on-loan goalkeeper Owen Goodman returned to Crystal Palace before being sent out to Huddersfield Town in another temporary move. That's three key starters now out of the club, and they've not made major moves in the summer transfer window, with two of their signings only joining earlier this week and unlikely to play a big role, if any, on Friday.
Luton, on the other hand, have snapped up Wells, scorer of 28 Championship goals for Bristol City over the last three seasons, including 10 in 2024/25. The Hatters have also brought in Saville, who made 45 second-tier appearances for Millwall during the previous campaign, and Keeley, who starred for the O's in League 1 and the FA Cup on loan from Spurs.
Bloomfield's side look primed for a tilt at the title this season, and I expect them to get underway in ideal fashion this Friday, beating the Dons without conceding.
Luton ended the 2024/25 season by keeping five clean sheets in their last 12 games, winning all but one of those matches in which they had recorded a shutout. They've been solid in pre-season, too, shutting out Boreham Wood (3-0), Gillingham (2-0) and Southend United (2-0) in victories, and stopping Spurs from scoring in a goalless draw; in fact, only Slovenian side Triglav, who suffered an 8-1 defeat, on July 12, managed to breach their back line during the summer.
The Dons, meanwhile, failed to score in their final three friendlies, losing to Sutton United (0-2), Millwall (0-3) and Southend (0-1), and blanked in three consecutive games before their four-game run of 1-0 wins at the back end of the previous campaign.
Friday's hosts are expected to dominate proceedings, which should help to land the second selection of this Price Boost, which requires Luton to take the most corners. Shots and crosses help to win set-pieces, such as corners, and the Hatters are likely to be peppering AFC Wimbledon's box at Kenilworth Road, with the visitors needing to make several saves and blocks.
The third and final leg centres on new Luton signing Wells, who has been a solid performer at Championship level for the past eight seasons. The 35-year-old is in the latter stages of his career, but still managed double figures for goals in the 2024/25 second tier, so he's a good shout to net anytime on Friday.

Player to Receive a Card - Ryan Johnson (WIM) @ 7/2
Hutchinson is the standout name in this market, having established a reputation as a serial fouler and card merchant across his career. The Chelsea Academy graduate has hit double figures for cards in six separate league seasons and racked up seven yellows in just 18 League 2 appearances in 2024/25.
However, given he didn't feature in the Millwall friendly on July 22 and only played the first half against Southend four days later, I wonder whether the 35-year-old may be used as a substitute, rather than a starter, at Kenilworth Road. In any case, his 13/10 price is hardly enticing.
Instead, I'm backing Dons defender Ryan Johnson, who played the majority of last season on the left of a back three, to receive a card against Luton.
The 28-year-old is a certain starter, fitness permitting, and was shown eight yellows in 43 League 2 appearances last term, including three in his last seven outings.
On Friday, Johnson could be tasked with containing the talents of right-sided Hatters attacker Alli, who was fouled four times in his team's final Championship contest last season against West Bromwich Albion. Alli joined Luton in January from Exeter City, for whom he averaged 1.2 fouls won per game in League 1 prior to his departure.
The 25-year-old can be a tricky customer for opponents to deal with, and if gets a run at Johnson, don't be surprised to see the Dons defender take alternative action to ward off his threat.
