Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Odds: Top-four finish for Frank?

Despite Ange Postecoglou delivering Tottenham Hotspur’s first major trophy for 17 years, a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League last season saw the Australian relived of his duties as Spurs manager. Thomas Frank has been brought in as his replacement, ushering in a new era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As mentioned in the introduction, last season was a very mixed bag for Spurs. They enjoyed the highest of highs in Bilbao, beating Manchester United in the Europa League final, ending their 17-year trophy drought in the process – as well as qualifying for the Champions League.
However, they also suffered their worst-ever finish in the Premier League which ultimately cost Postecoglou his job at the helm. So it's down to Frank to rebuild the club, and if he manages to lose fewer than 22 league games, then by definition, Spurs will have had a better campaign than last year.
After inheriting a side that finished 17th last year, perhaps aspirations of a top-five finish may be slightly ambitious, but Postecoglou underperformed massively in the league, and Frank will surely get a better tune out of this squad.
Frank will be disappointed to see his side throw away a two-goal lead in the Uefa Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain to ultimately lose on penalties, but the Spurs manager will take encouragement from the performance, given that they went toe-to-toe with the best side in Europe.

Transfer Business:
Transfers In: Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United - £55m), Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich - £30m) Kevin Danso (Lens - £21m), Luka Vuskovic (Hajduk Split - £12m), Kota Takai (Kawasaki Frontale - £5m), Joao Palhinha (Bayern Munich – loan)
Transfers Out: Son Heung-min (Los Angeles FC – £20m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Marseille - £17m), Mikey Moore (Rangers – loan), Alejo Veliz (Rosario Central – loan), Sergio Reguilon (released), Fraser Forster (released), Alfie Whiteman (released)
The signing of Kudus from West Ham United is a shrewd bit of business and the 25-year-old's tireless energy will provide a spark to what was a stagnatic Spurs attack at times under Postecoglou.
The permanent signing of Mathys Tel also seemed necessary with Son Heung-min departing for Los Angeles FC and Richarlison being injury-prone. Frank has demonstrated his ability to get the best out of his forwards at Brentford - Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa are names that immediately spring to mind - so the former Bayern Munich man may flourish under the Dane's guidance.
The departure of Son after 10 years at the club is a huge loss of experience, on and off the pitch and the South Korea international is fifth on Spurs' all-time scoring list. His goals will be missed but Frank certainly has plenty of attacking options after the signings of Kudus and Tel, as well as Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski.
Key Player: Dominic Solanke
Spurs broke their transfer record to sign Solanke from Bournemouth last summer, and fans will be hoping Frank can work his magic and get the best out of the 27-year-old, given his track record at developing players.
It's probably slightly premature to determine whether the signing was a success but Spurs did look a better side with Solanke up front last term, and struggled whenever he was absent. However, the former Liverpool man scored just 14 times in 45 appearances last season, with eight of those being non-penalty goals.
Solanke is capable of far better, and he did struggle with injuries last year in all fairness. He scored 19 goals in his final season at Bournemouth, and Spurs will be hoping to see a similar return this year from their number 19.
An ankle injury has disrupted the English forward's pre-season preparation, but he did feature off the bench in Spurs' defeat to PSG in the Super Cup on Wednesday night, so fans will be hoping he's fit and raring to go for the opening fixture against Burnley.

Prediction: 5th
Spurs will be a much better team this season.
At Brentford, Frank developed a reputation of being one of the most tactically astute managers in the league, who was pragmatic enough to change systems to suit opponents.
Balancing domestic competitions with Champions League football may prove the toughest task for Frank given that he only ever really had to focus on the league at Brentford, but Spurs have the squad depth to handle the demands.
