Football Bet of the Day: Thistle to flower in Scotland

England are in action in a European Championship semi-final on Tuesday night, but with that game already well-covered on Betfred Insights, I’ve looked north of the border for the Football Bet of the Day. 

The group stages of the Scottish League Cup continue in earnest, and below I’ve taken a look at a fixture between Partick Thistle and Queen of the South. 

Partick Thistle are looking very good in the early throws of the 2025/26 campaign, and it’s no surprise. Since getting back to the Scottish Championship they have been knocking on the door of the Premiership, finishing fourth or third in each of the last three seasons - falling foul of the play-offs each time. 

However, it does now look like they could end that run of near-misses as they look ready to challenge for the title this time around. Mark Wilson is already laying the foundations for a successful league season with this positive Scottish League Cup group phase. 

Partick have already won two from two, beating Edinburgh City 4-1 and Stranraer 2-0 comfortably. Their next test comes as they host Queen of the South at Firhill, with this game potentially setting up a crunch clash with Ross County in their final group game.

Queen of the South are currently promotion-chasers in Scottish League One but missed out in the play-offs having finished third last term. Cove Rangers beat them in the semis while Peter Murphy is now looking to guide his side back to the second tier. The Doonhamers beat Edinburgh City 4-0 before losing 1-0 to Ross County, and this will be another tough test on the road. 

Despite their obvious qualities, there is an entire divison between these two teams and Partick have home advantage on their side. These two have drawn one and won two apiece in their last five meetings, but there is clearly a gap in quality between them in 2025. Both will hope that their upcoming campaigns end in promotion, but I’m going to side with Partick Thistle to get the job done and make it nine points from a possible nine.
