22:05 Saratoga (Race 8) - Raging Sea (5) @ SP
Raging Sea (5) had a fine 2024 winning four times. That includes this race and a Grade 1. In terms of form, she’s not ran quite as well in two starts this term. She has not been far off her best, winning a Grade 1 at Churchill and being third in another here. In her latest start, she got far behind on a sloppy track and only made modest late headway. That day, speed held well and it was really hard to close. There is a possibility of pace to chase down here. She looks the gal to beat at a pretty short price.
Raging Sea (5) did finish almost two lengths behind Dazzling Move (6) in that Grade 1 over course and distance last month. That four year old has really upped her game since trying nine furlongs. She did have the benefit of the lead on her own on a conveyor belt of a track last time. Malibu Beauty (7) has the speed to be a spoiler to her. That mare may not run as she has an alternative engagement at Delaware.
The evergreen seven year old Malibu Beauty (7) wired a field in a stake at Delaware last month. In doing so, she upset favourites Gun Song (2) and Sidamara (1). Gun Song (2) got really good at the end of her three year old season. She won a stake at Parx before losing narrowly in a Grade 1 and 2. A repeat of that form makes her a big player. Sidamara (1) so far hasn’t the form of the best of these. She is only lightly raced and may be capable of better especially racing in blinkers first time.
Leslie's Rose (3) has a couple of standout runs last year to her name. She won a Grade 1 at Keeneland and ran second to champion three year old Thorpedo Anna in another. It is easy to forgive her run when pulled up in The Grade 1 Dazzling Move (6) and Raging Sea (5) was placed in. That race in glue like slop and not for the first time didn’t handle those conditions. She has tactical speed and should be a price after her last run. If the selection is to be turned over, she may be the gal to do it.
As well as favoured Raging Sea (5), Chad Brown has entered Prides Crossing (4). She has been freshened up since back to back runner up tries in conditions races. This is a big step up in class but her trainer rarely tilts at windmills.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
22:17 Monmouth Park (Race 8) - on turf: Bingo's Birkin (1) @ SP. On dirt: Duela Dent (6) @ SP
Bingo's Birkin (1) looked much improved in only three starts last year. She followed up a maiden and allowance win with close up second in a state bred stake. Her two starts this term have not been as good. She did run fairly well in the face of a tough task when getting back on the turf last month. Now dropping in class from a deep stakes event, she may be worth siding with.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Duela Dent (6) looks an interesting alternative to the selection. She’s won back to back races by open lengths. The latest being a starter here last month. They were on dirt so is an obvious contender if this race gets switched to the main track. Her two starts on turf earlier in her career were not bad. She is a much improved filly since then so may be able to transfer her form on the surface switch. With the possibility of the lead on her own, she is very playable or worth a saver forecast.
Singalong Kayla (5), Molly's a Bullet (9) and Princess Gladys (7) filled the places in a similar event to this one last month. Singalong Kayla (5) who has more tactical speed than she showed last time. She may be the one to take from that race. She’s a contender. So too is Tap It Up (8) off a close up third over course and distance in May.
Wellareyouhappynow (3) won a claimer on her comeback last month. This is not a deep race for the level so the class rise is not that big. Blame the Banker (4) goes in the other direction after fading in a stake over an extended mile. Based on the speed she showed there, the cut back to today’s distance may suit. The lone three year old in this line up is likely to have improvement to come. She may be the best chance outside of the likely favourites.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
22:38 Saratoga (Race 9) - Fond Farewell (4) @ SP
Asbury Park (1) could be another in the long line of turf winners for trainer Chad Brown at Saratoga. He was very green on debut here last summer but still shaped like he had plenty of ability. After ten months away, he was far more professional second time out. The son of Frankel won a maiden by three plus lengths over course and distance. There is likely better to come from him. He ticks all the boxes with the possible exception of his price. The runner to fear.
A couple of these drop in class after fine efforts in stakes races. King of Ashes (7) missed by a neck at Churchill in May. If he can repeat that run cutting back slightly in distance, he will be on the podium at least. Bakers Street (2) will be much longer odds and is worth considering, possibly each way. He ran second to a runner completing a stakes hat-trick at Gulfstream last month. The winner ran well in a Grade 1 here subsequently.
As well as Asbury Park (1), there are three other last time maiden winners of interest. Plensa (5) ran a big speed figure when scoring at Churchill. Strate Cash (6) and Fond Farewell (4) won sprinting on their only starts to date. Both are bred to handle more ground. Strate Cash (6) was the subject of a private purchase when winning well at Santa Anita. He now runs for talented trainer Cherie Devaux. The handler of Fond Farewell (4) is a very capable operator too. He ran to his market billing on debut at Churchill. That was despite a slow start and getting held up in traffic. The second and two other runners from that maiden came back to score. Maybe take him to win this with a forecast with Asbury Park (1).
