Saturday 28th June 2025, 6:36am

Our Football Bet of the Day for Saturday, June 28 has to focus on the Under-21 European Championship final as England U21 face Germany U21 in Bratislava (20:00, Channel 4). It’s a chance for Lee Carsley’s men to retain their title, after they edged past the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

Below you can find my Football Bet of the Day as we hunt for more value.

Football Bet of the Day - Saturday, June 28

  • Price Boost - BTTS, Harvey Elliott and Nick Woltemade both 2+ shots on target @ 6/1

*odds correct at time of publication

This final is truly one to get the pulses racing. England U21 have grown into this tournament but in the knockout stages they have taken things to the next level, battering Spain and then beating the Dutch having clearly been the better team across the 90 minutes.

Carsley is targeting a defence of the title he and his Young Lions won in 2023, and now they are just one game away from success in Slovakia. They face their biggest challenge so far in the form of a Germany outfit that have swept aside all before them in this competition, including beating England 2-1 in the group stage on their way to maximum points.

I think this will be a really even match, with plenty of goals based upon what we have seen so far, and although I would probably edge towards England winning it, I think the Price Boost on offer gives us far better value. BTTS is the first selection having come in not only when the teams met in the group stage, but in both of England’s knockout wins.

Germany also beat Italy 3-2 in their last-eight tie, before comprehensively beating Romania 3-0 in the semis, but they did enjoy a thrilling 4-2 success over Czech Republic in their group. There’s been plenty of goals at this tournament, with Germany the top scorers at the finals with 15 goals.

Today's Football Fixtures

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • BTTS scored in their group stage meeting, and in both of England's knockout matches
  • Harvey Elliott has scored four goals this tournament
  • Nick Woltemade is the top scorer having scored six goals from seven shots on target

I think we should get another open encounter in Bratislava, so I think BTTS is a safe selection, while I’m also happy to focus on two of the stars of the tournament to have a couple of shots apiece. Nick Woltemade has been simply sensational so far, leading the way with six goals, and the Stuttgart forward has also added three assists, with his nine goal contributions the most any player has recorded at this competition since Opta began recording the data in 2007.

He has had seven shots on target this campaign, remarkably finishing six of those chances and although I’d be happy to back him to score, I think picking out Germany’s leading marksman to have two shots on goal is also a sensible approach. Meanwhile, England’s semi-final hero Harvey Elliott has scored four goals at this tournament, two coming against the Netherlands last time out.

England U21 vs Germany U21 Odds

He has 13 goals in 25 U21 appearances now, the same number Alan Shearer managed, and is clearly ready to be a starter in the Premier League. If England are going to win this competition again, Elliott is likely to play a big role and so I’m happy to back him to have a couple of efforts on target in this final.
