Royal ascot lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

Royal Ascot! It's here - a week of high-class flat action featuring some of the finest thoroughbreds on the planet. We enter the arena in excellent form - Saturday's Lucky 15 from Uttoxeter contained three cracking winners (advised at 11/2, 6/5 and 10/3), and our other pick was second, beaten just over 2l.

The action on Tuesday starts at 14:30, there are seven contests including three at Group 1, and we'll be with you every day until and including Saturday. It's sure to be an exhilarating week and if you're planning a wee tickle enjoy, above all have fun, and the very best of luck.

I'm going to play each-way today - we've got one price, at least at time of writing, that really cries out for that treatment; and two that have definite merit in moving in that direction, too. If it helps our chances of achieving a return, let's go for it; but as always, if you decide to play, with my selections or yours, it's entirely up to you.

Good to firm ground looks to be the order of the week; the fast and the furious then, and ultra-competitive, of course. It should be absolutely scintillating.

15:05 - Andab @ 11/1

Very fast two-year-olds go 6f in our first leg, I'm unashamedly going for value, and in the context of some in this Coventry renewal, relative experience.

Andab is a son of 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior out of an Invincible Spirit mare. Ready scorer in a Curragh maiden, he achieved even more next time at the same venue 23 days ago when running Albert Einstein to 1.5l in a G3.

Being involved in a proper battle like that gives him an edge on most of this field in my view as many are coming fresh from a solitary, doubtless outstanding performance in an ordinary maiden or similar (as with the likely favourite Postmodern) before tackling this G2.

Andab has every right to keep improving after two starts but it's that last one that could be key here - and the lessons learned from it. Joseph O'Brien trains, Dylan Browne McMonagle rides, and the colt runs in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing/Trevor Stewart.

Another of today's rivals, Power Blue, was 0.75l in front of the selection last time but that was already his third run, and while there might not be much between the pair, I expect Andab to improve past him today.

Betfred are paying four places each-way.

15:40 - Believing @ 9/2

5f flyers now, G1, and one of the week's many, many standout moments. We're paying four places each-way once again.

The heat has an absolutely wide-open look to it, and I'm plumping for a five-year-old Mehmas mare who was beaten 1.5l in this last year, and whose consistency in these top-table sprints is exemplary.

She's been second in a Nunthorpe, third in a Prix l'Abbaye; her dance card in the last couple of seasons is stacked with Listed and Group-race notations and she's top-drawer. She arrives fresh from an April G1 success in Meydan and trainer George Boughey already has few peers when it comes to preparing a good one.

Ryan Moore has the riding assignment which only increases confidence, and Believing races in the famous colours of Derrick Smith. What an awesome, million-mile-an-hour affair this will be!

17:00 - Reaching High @ 7/2

There's an interesting story here. Will the tale soar to even greater heights this afternoon?

Reaching High is a four-year-old gelded son of the magnificent Sea The Stars. He was bred by our late Queen Elizabeth II, and is owned by HM The King & HM The Queen. Guess who the horse's 'Mum' is?

Prior to his retirement he was in the care of Sir Michael Stoute but has intriguingly, since mid-May, been residing with Willie Mullins in County Carlow. One win in nine career starts so far, and just the one run for Willie - at Leopardstown 32 days ago, under Jody Townend.

He was beaten a short-head over a mile-and-a-half when I thought the jockey understandably didn't exactly throw the kitchen sink at him on his first spin for the new yard, a matter of a few days after arriving, and Willie will have a far greater idea as to the horse's capabilities and foibles now.

This trip today is an extreme one (2m 4f), and of course for most an entirely unknown quantity. Sire Sea The Stars was extremely versatile at admittedly lesser distances but looking back particularly on his Arc victory he hit the line strongly, and if you've got the class, particularly on decent ground, you've got a chance.

East India Dock should be a formidable opponent, and there are any number of dangers, but we've seen RL Moore carry these legendary colours to top staying successes at the Royal meeting (notably with Estimate, trained by Stoute, in the Gold Cup of 2013); and this might just be another such red-letter occasion.

Reaching High's dam? The mighty Estimate, who else. I bet the film script is being written as we speak ...

It's a five places each-way heat.

18:10 - French Master @ 5/2

Another staying test, this time over 1m 6f.

Wathnan Racing field my selection French Master, and as I write he's a fairly warm order. Regular retained pilot James Doyle will be doing the pushing, and Team Gosden train.

The four-year-old Frankel colt is up 4lb for a narrow win last time at Goodwood 24 days ago, needing every yard of the trip (same as today's) to beat Story Horse. He's only just been acquired by Wathnan from Normandie Racing this very month, but remains of course at Clarehaven, at HQ.

He's had two runs since reappearing for the season in May, and has shown steady progression at this Class 2 level. There's more under the bonnet I suspect and this one could develop into a Group-class stayer. Episode one of the climb to such lofty heights could well be broadcast this very afternoon.

Each-way, we're paying five places.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £540 for your total £7.50 stake.
