Horse Racing Tips: Red-hot jockey can strike at Yarmouth

There’s Flat and jump racing across Britain and Ireland on Thursday with six meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening.

Newbury, Yarmouth and Nottingham race in the afternoon before Leopardstown, Chelmsford and Worcester go later on. Among our Horse Racing Tips for Thursday is one for the Birketts who can go well now teamed up with an in-form jockey.

13:52 Yarmouth - Heer’s Sadie @ 6/1

Although campaigned primarily at Brighton over the last couple of seasons, Julia and Shelley Birkett’s HEER’S SADIE has a course win to her name and showed up okay when returned to Yarmouth last time.

That run, her third of the year, came over a mile on good to soft ground, whereas she has never won on ground softer than good, and her wins have all come at today’s trip of 7f or shorter.

She is an uncomplicated ride suited to today’s hands-and-heels race conditions and has been ridden by apprentice jockeys for each of her victories.

Ashley Lewis has won on his last three mounts (up to Wednesday), producing well-judged efforts on each occasion, and can strike again here on his first ride for the stable.

16:25 Newbury - Hickory @ 5/1

Although this looks a competitive heat, Jamie Osborne’s HICKORY will appreciate running at this slightly lower level and, with a fast race looking likely, he can swoop late to get a second win of the season.

Only lightly raced for a seven-year-old, he has really blossomed for a stable switch this season, producing one of his best ever runs to take the Victoria Cup over today’s trip at Ascot on his seasonal/stable debut.

He was unable to follow up off his new mark at Sandown last time, but was in an impossible position after getting whacked coming from the stalls and did very well to get as close as he did at the line.

Unlike the selection, the first two home were always to the fore that day, and Hickory showed himself well capable of scoring again with the right opportunity.

The Victoria Cup he won was a Class 2 and his Sandown effort came in a 0-95, so back into a 0-90 and with pace looking likely through Local Hero and Twisted Physics, he can be expected to pounce late.

17:33 Newbury - Vilaine Verlaine @ 12/1

VILAINE VERLAINE is a progressive three-year-old and looks a decent each-way wager in what is admittedly a fairly deep race.

There are plenty of powerful stables represented in this 1m4f handicap, but nothing that looks thrown in on what they have achieved yet, and this should help to ensure Mark Usher’s filly goes off at a double-figure price.

She has put in two really nice performances so far this year, finishing fourth behind one who went close at Epsom last week and then second at Kempton, giving weight to a progressive filly of Emma Lavelle’s. Those two runs should have her spot on for today’s assignment.

As one of only three winners in this field she has proven she can get the job done, and with both of those victories coming under today’s pilot Neil Callan - who returns to do the steering for the first time this season, she looks sure to go well.
