Betfred Derby Draw: Lambourn gets lucky number 10

It has been a busy morning for those eagerly anticipating the Betfred Derby at Epsom on Saturday afternoon, with final declarations now made, jockeys confirmed for the 19-runner field and, crucially, the draw for starting stalls completed.

The Betfred Derby draw was conducted FA Cup style at Epsom's Picture House this morning, with master of ceremonies Rishi Persad joined by Derby-winning riders Willie Carson and Martin Dwyer.

The big news was that The Lion In Winter has been assigned the widest berth of all in stall 19, while 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court is nicely placed in stall 7.

No stall has produced more Derby winners than 10, where Aidan O'Brien's third string, Lambourn, will break from.

Stall-important numbers

• History tells us that stall 10 has been the most successful draw, with 11 winners in total since starting stalls were introduced in 1967.
• The next most successful draw down the years has come from gate five, with six Derby winners.
• No runners have been successful from stalls two, 11 or 16.
• The Lion In Winter has been handed a wide draw in 19, a position that has produced just one winner.
• Stall one has housed five winners, including last year's victor City Of Troy.

Ruling Court in stall seven

Charlie Appleby's 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court drew stall seven, as the Godolphin runner attempts to keep his Triple Crown dreams alive. His starting gate has produced three Derby winners, a respectable tally.

Three winners have also emerged from stalls three (Lazy Griff), six (Tuscan Hills), eight (Green Storm) and 12 (Tennessee Stud).

The race is being run this year in memory of the Aga Khan, whose silks are to be carried by Midak out of stall four. He's one of two French-based raiders, with New Ground in stall 17.

Lion handed the wide alley

The Lion In Winter will break from stall 19, the widest of all, and Aidan O'Brien's colt, who was unbeaten at two, has been overlooked by Ryan Moore. He was well held in the Dante at York on his return and will have Colin Keane for company at Epsom.

Moore has committed to Delacroix (stall 14), winner of two trials at Leopardstown this season, while the final Ballydoyle contender is Lambourn, who breaks from the lucky 10 gate.

Beckett's pair handed unwanted berths

Dante winner Pride Of Arras is one of two Derby contenders for Ralph Beckett, the Kimpton trainer also saddling Stanhope Gardens.

They were handed stalls 16 and two respectively. Remarkably, those are two of just three stalls in use this year that have never produced a Derby winner, meaning Beckett's pair will need to break the hoodoo if they are to go on to Epsom glory.
