Newcastle vs Ipswich Prediction: Magpies to respond

Not many people could have predicted that Newcastle United would be thrashed 4-1 by Aston Villa last weekend, which ended a five-game winning streak in the Premier League. The result was a setback in the Magpies' Uefa Champions League pursuit and they will look to bounce back when they take on Ipswich Town at St James' Park on Saturday (15:00).
The Tractor Boys were comfortably beaten 4-0 at home to Arsenal on Sunday and they are at risk of having relegation confirmed on Tyneside if they fail to win or other results go against them. Below you will find my Newcastle vs Ipswich predictions, alongside the latest team news and match odds.

Team News
Newcastle had a bad day at the office at Villa Park and assistant head coach Jason Tindall may put an emphasis on defensive security against Ipswich on Saturday. The hosts are short of options at the back, though, due to injuries to Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles (both knee) and Lewis Hall (foot).
Anthony Gordon will be hoping for a recall in attack but Harvey Barnes has been performing well in recent weeks, so Tindall may persist with the former Leicester City on the left flank.
Top scorer Alexander Isak will lead the line as usual, while Jacob Murphy will provide width on the right, as he has enjoyed a very fruitful campaign.
Newcastle have now a very settled midfield three of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, who will be looking to impose themselves after being overrun by Villa last week.
Newcastle vs Ipswich Stats
- Newcastle have won their last four PL home games
- Jacob Murphy has assisted in his past three PL appearances at St James' Park
Ipswich are without the services of Jaden Philogene after he suffered a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea on April 13. Leif Davis will serve the first of a three-match ban following his straight red card against Arsenal last time out.
Conor Townsend, Ipswich's only other left-back, is a doubt to feature, so Jacob Greaves looks likely to fill in there on Saturday. Boss Kieran McKenna is still having to cope with injuries to Kalvin Phillips (calf) and Chiedozie Ogbene ( Achilles), with the latter being out for the long term.
Wes Burns (knee), Sammie Szmodics (ankle), Arijanet Muric (shoulder), Nathan Broadhead and Omari Hutchinson (both thigh) are also unavailable for the Tractor Boys.
Top scorer Liam Delap started on the bench against Arsenal, so he will likely be recalled to the XI on Saturday as the visitors are in desperate need of three points.
Newcastle are the 1/5 favourites to win this match because they have won their last four fixtures at St James' Park. The Magpies have won 38% (6/16) of their home games to nil this term, including four of their previous nine (44%).
They are 21/20 (which has an implied probability of 48.8%) to triumph via this method.
Two of Ipswich's last five away trips in the Premier League have ended in a stalemate and the draw is on offer at 5/1 on Saturday. The Tractor Boys are 11/1 to come away from Tyneside with the three points - and they have won once on their travels in their past two attempts.
Newcastle striker Isak has 21 goals in the top flight so far and 52% (11/21) of them have come in NE1. The Sweden international has four in as many appearances at SJP coming into Saturday and he is 8/15 to score anytime.
Newcastle to win to nil @ 21/20
Newcastle cannot afford a hangover from their drubbing in the West Midlands and I predict that defeat will get the players fired up to deliver a response on their home return against Ipswich.
They are up against one of the worst-performing sides in the division, who they thrashed 4-0 at Portman Road back in December. It feels like it is a case of when not if regarding the Tractor Boys' relegation, and this could be sealed at St James' Park.
Newcastle may have just had an off day at Villa Park and we cannot ignore the fact that they had won five games on the spin before Saturday, including a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace here on April 16.
I think the hosts will be eager to record a clean sheet after shipping four last time out and I am backing them to do just that, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them hit Ipswich for four again. I'm expecting a comfortable victory for the home side.

Jacob Murphy - Player assists a goal @ 2/1
Murphy has been enjoying a brilliant campaign in the Premier League for Newcastle this term. The winger has eight goals in the top flight but he also has 11 assists to his name.
Only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (18) has teed up his teammates more than Murphy. I think 2/1 offers great value for the Englishman to add to his tally on Saturday because he has an assist in each of Newcastle's last three home games in the league.
He had one of his best performances at Portman Road in the reverse meeting, too, as he bagged a goal and an assist in the 4-0 triumph. Could the wide man be in for another strong display against the Tractor Boys?
