AC Milan vs Girona Prediction: Goals expected at San Siro

AC Milan are on a roll in the Uefa Champions League, having won four matches on the spin. After a month away, I Rossoneri return to action in Europe as they welcome Girona to San Siro on Wednesday (20:00, TNT Sports 6).
The visitors have just one of their Champions League fixtures to date, while losing the rest of them. Check out my AC Milan vs Girona prediction below, where you will also find the latest match odds and team news.
Milan have won two of their three home clashes in Europe so far and they are on a four-game winning streak in the competition. They are 2/5 to win on Wednesday, so Milan and both teams to score might be a more attractive option at 2/1 (which has an implied probability of 33.3%), as it has been a winning selection in each of those four victories.
Girona have lost all of their away trips in the Champions League and they are 11/2 to pull off an up set at San Siro. The last three Serie A contests at San Siro have ended in a stalemate, and the draw is on offer at 16/5.
Over 3.5 goals has struck in four of Milan's six outings in Europe this term and is marketed at 13/8 (38.1%) to land on Wednesday night.
Team News
I Rossoneri head into Wednesday with some defensive concerns. Boss Sergio Conceicao is unable to call upon his main centre-back pairing of Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw due to suspension and injury respectively.
Strahinja Pavlovic is expected to come into the side to partner Matteo Gabbia, who featured alongside Tomori in the defeat to Juventus last weekend. Noah Okafor, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Samuel Chukwueze are ruled out for this one, while Alessandro Florenzi remains the club's notable long-term absentee.
There is hope that attacking duo Christian Pulisic and Alvaro Morata will be able to overcome muscular problems to be involved against Girona. Morata won't be guaranteed a start if he is declared fit to play, however, as Tammy Abraham has netted in each of his last two outings in the Champions League.
Pulisic is his team's joint-top scorer in Europe with three goals, alongside Tijjani Reijnders, so his return would be a welcome boost for the hosts.
Girona welcomed back Yaser Asprilla to the squad at the weekend, with the winger having been out of action since Christmas, while Portu returned after a one-game absence.
Former Aberdeen front man Bojan Miovski is struggling with an ankle issue, so we should see Abel Ruiz lead the line for the Spanish outfit. Defender Miguel Gutierrez is also struggling with his ankle, so his involvement looks doubtful.
Boss Michel is expecting to be able to name Arnaut Danjuma in the squad on Wednesday after overcoming a recent illness. The Dutchman has recorded the most shots (11) out of any Girona player in the Champions League this season, despite only starting two of their six matches to date.
AC Milan and both teams to score @ 2/1
Milan will have been disappointed that the Champions League break came when it did because they were one of the form sides in the competition. Their form in Serie A has been mixed since their last European encounter, and they are on a run of three draws at San Siro currently.
They will look to end this on Wednesday when Girona come to town. I Rossoneri are 12th in the 36-team standings and are in with an excellent chance of qualifying directly for the round of 16 by finishing in the top eight.
Milan may have had to wait a month for this clash but they will be fired up, especially after they recently won the Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh, defeating bitter rivals Inter Milan in the final.
Conceicao's men can be hit-and-miss, but their strongest form has come in Europe. With two games left to play and a chance to avoid a pressurised play-off tie, I Rossoneri will want to capitalise on this home fixture against a Girona side who have struggled in this competition.
With Reijnders, Abraham, Rafael Leao and the potential returns of Pulisic and Morata, they should have more than enough to get past the Spanish side. I do think Girona will get on the scoresheet, though, as the hosts are without their two main centre-backs, while they haven't kept a clean sheet in the Champions League this term.

Over 3.5 goals @ 13/8
With a lack of clean sheets, Milan have had to make a habit of ensuring they outscore their opponents, and they have been involved in quite a few high-scoring games thus far.
Four of their results in Europe have produced over 3.5 goals, including three of their four-game winning streak. Girona have seen two of their Champions League ties feature four or more goals, which both came against Dutch opponents in Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.
They have blanked in four appearances so far but they are facing a side who can be vulnerable at the back and who are missing two key defenders on Wednesday night.
