Marcus Rashford has been at the centre of a media storm this week. He was left out, along with Alejandro Garnacho, of Manchester United’s derby day squad and has recently told Henry Winter that he is “ready for a new challenge.”

"For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps," Rashford, who has been at the club since he was a kid, told Winter, during a visit to his former primary school. Unsurprisingly, this has set the rumour-mill running on whether he could leave United next month and Betfred has got a market up on which club he could join in the January transfer window. Rashford continued to talk like a man who was on his way out of the club he has been at for 20 years. "When I leave it's going to be 'no hard feelings'. If I know that a situation is already bad I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen how other players have left in the past and I don't want to be that person. When I leave I'll make a statement and it will be from me."

Betfred have long-term suitors PSG as 4/1 favourites for the Wythenshawe-born academy product to move to the French capital during the fast-approaching transfer window. If Rashford, now 27, wants to cash in during January and move to any Saudi Arabian Pro League club that's 5/1.

Chelsea might want to bolster their Premier League title-chasing squad and are 9/1 ahead of 10/1 Arsenal for the England international, who needs a move sooner rather than later to revive his career.

Barcelona, who like PSG have been linked with a £40m move, are at 12/1 while any MLS club are available at 20/1. Next up Betfred have Spurs, Bayern Munich and Newcastle at 25/1. An audacious move by City to land Rashford by the closing of the window on February 3 is 33/1 - the same price as a switch to Liverpool or Juventus.

Rashford has scored four goals in 15 Premier League appearances so far this term, but it's not that long since he hit 17 league goals in 2022/23 - and his ability is obvious for all to see. In an era where perhaps only Bruno Fernandes has been a successful signing for the Red Devils, they have relied heavily on their homegrown talent, and it’s unfortunate that he seems to run hot and cold.

His England career also needs reviving. After scoring a couple of goals at the 2022 World Cup, he was left out of the squad for Euro 2024, and there wasn’t much of a fuss around his absence which says a lot about his recent form. Although a move away from Old Trafford would make a statement for both Rashford and his new boss Ruben Amorim, I’m not sure this relationship is dead in the water.

Amorim needed to prove a point with a couple of star names. Just as Mikel Arteta did with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil, sometimes a new manager needs to make an example of a couple of stars who simply aren’t pulling their weight.

“United need big talent and he’s a big talent, so he just needs to perform at the highest level. That’s my focus,” the Manchester United manager said in a press conference. “I just want to help Marcus. We are better with Marcus. I will try different things to push Marcus to the best levels he showed in the past.”

At 27, Rashford’s current contract runs until 2028 and is estimated to be worth £325k a week. He’s not been worth anywhere near that for a while now, so if United can get him off the books it may be for the best. Any suitors are going to have to pay a big wage to the English winger though, but in terms of transfer value they could pick up a bargain in the January sales.
