Football Bet of the Day: Two goalscorers selected on the South Coast

Thursday 5th December 2024, 8:53am

We’ve got a couple of cracking Premier League matches coming our way on Thursday night, as this midweek round of fixtures comes to an end. Fulham host Brighton and Hove Albion at Craven Cottage, but our focus is on Bournemouth v Tottenham Hotspur which kicks off at 20:15 on Amazon Prime.

Below you can find my Football Bet of the Day for Thursday, November 4.

Football Bet of the Day - Thursday, December 6

  • Antoine Semenyo and Brennan Johnson to score @ 11/2

Bournemouth v Tottenham on Thursday night promises to be a cracker as we enter December. These two teams have so much attacking quality that I think there will be plenty of goals at both ends, and a high-scoring affair is therefore on the cards.

Let’s start with Spurs. Under Ange Postecoglou, they have been hit and miss, but boy have they been entertaining. Ahead of the midweek matches, no side in the Premier League has scored more goals than the 28 they have posted so far, which means they are averaging over two goals a game this term. With James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson all playing starring roles, and Dejan Kulusevski flourishing, it’s perhaps no wonder that they are playing to their strengths and taking teams on.

They are also performing well in terms of the underlying statistics - offensively and defensively. Only Manchester City have created a higher xG per 90 than Spurs (1.81) this season and they continue to impress with their attacking variety. Defensively they have conceded 14 goals in 13 matches which shows they are also pretty good defensively, while their xGA is also ranked as the second-highest in the division.

Bournemouth vs Tottenham Odds

I’m a big fan of watching Spurs, and the work Postecoglou has done. Statistically they may be able to crack the top four, but results on paper in recent weeks haven’t been all that great. They smashed Man City 4-0 at the Etihad, but have disappointed in the Europa League, lost to Ipswich and drawn to Fulham last time out.

However, there are goals in this team and that is what I’m going to focus on. I was going to select Dominic Solanke to score against his former club, but he has been ill recently and I’m not sure we can count on him to start as a result. Instead, I will back Johnson to find the net again. He’s Tottenham’s top scorer this season with six, and he’s also had the most shots out of anybody in white. 36 shots in total puts him 10 above Solanke, while he’s had 11 on target and been a relatively consistent performer in front of goal.

I’m happy to side with the Welsh international in what I believe should be an open encounter, while I’ll also pick out a home player to find the net. Having served a suspension last weekend, Antoine Semenyo is back in contention and I believe he can come back with a bang. He has scored four goals for Bournemouth this season but his shot numbers are off the charts.

He has now had 52 shots in 12 appearances, with 12 of them being on target. If he continues to fire at that rate in this game, I think he will be able to score, and remember Guglielmo Vicario is out injured so Fraser Forster will be in goal, something the home side will hope to take advantage of. I think we could see over 3.5 goals in this match, given the playing styles of both managers.

Getting 11/2 on this hungry, perhaps greedy duo to find the net feels like excellent value in my eyes. My Football Bet of the Day for Thursday, December 5 is Semenyo and Johnson to score at 11/2.
