Ross County enjoy home advantage against Celtic as Don Cowie’s men chase a rare win over the champions. The Staggies started the weekend down in seventh place in the Premiership following one win, four draws, and two defeats, scoring seven goals but conceding a dozen.
The locals have drawn each of their last two at this level and would surely view another share of the spoils as an excellent result. They pushed Celtic close in Glasgow last time, losing out to an early goal from Alistair Johnston.
Celtic may be the defending champions, fresh from winning a double last season and sitting pretty in the Premiership. Still, Brendan Rodgers needs a big performance on Sunday in Dingwall.
The Bhoys were battered from pillar to post by Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Tuesday in UEFA Champions League action. The game ended in embarrassment, with a final score of 7-1 in the Germans' favour. It was another horror show on the continent, and the finger of blame points at the manager.
Ross County is the home team looking to take advantage of any tired legs and low confidence in the away dressing room. But the Staggies are the underdogs at Betfred to get anything out of this game, and that makes perfect sense following a slow start to the season.
County have conceded the same number of goals as bottom club Hearts and have scored fewer than two of the teams beneath them in the pecking order. The home win is 14/1 at Betfred.
Celtic fans were quick to heap praise on their manager and team for how they’ve started the season, but many have had their fill of heavy defeats in Europe.
There appears to be little progress on that front, with the gap widening between the Scottish champions and the elite teams. A quick-fire return to winning ways is essential, and you can back the visitors at odds of 1/6. The draw will net backers 13/2, and that will appeal if you expect a tired Celtic performance.
Celtic -1 handicap
We expect Celtic to dust themselves down and get back to what’s most important to the fans: dominating Scottish football.
A Sunday trip to Dingwall for a noon kick-off isn’t ideal following such a heavy and demoralising defeat in Germany, but Rodgers has the luxury of being able to change things and bring freshness to the team. We’ll see if the manager has strength in depth this season.
Looking through the recent meetings of Ross County and Celtic, we see backing the Hoops -1 goal on the handicap would’ve returned a profit in three of the last four.
That run includes a memorable 3-0 win at this venue back in November of last year when David Turnbull, Luis Palma, and James Forrest were on the scoresheet. Celtic also beat St Johnstone 6-0 in their most recent league outing, after scoring five past Falkirk in the League Cup at home.

Maeda to score
Moving away from predicting the winner of Sunday’s contest, we’re picking Daizen Maeda to score in Dingwall and continue his impressive form. He has been the standout performer for Celtic at home and on the continent so far, and the big clubs are expected to come calling in January if he remains consistent and continues to score important goals.
The Japanese attacker has scored in each of his last three games, finding the net against Slavan Bratislava, St Johnstone, and Borussia Dortmund.
Going back further, we see he scored seven goals in his previous eight outings, and it pays to stick with that kind of form. Back him to score first on Sunday or try the anytime scorer market.
