Aston villa park general scaled

Aston Villa take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League at Villa Park on Wednesday (20:00, TNT Sports 1) as the hosts look to build on their opening victory over Young Boys a fortnight ago.

Bayern were also victorious as they set a record-breaking 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb. The German giants have a lot of firepower which Villa will need to be wary of. This looks like it could be one of the most exciting European clashes on Wednesday and this is where my football bet of the day comes.

Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, October 2

  • Bet Builder - Bayern Munich to win, both teams to score, over 3.5 goals, Amadou Onana to receive a card, Harry Kane and Michael Olise to score anytime @ 28/1

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich Odds

These two sides meet for the first time since the 1982 European Cup final in which Villa prevailed (and to some of their fans, we are still in that year). Manager Unai Emery has done an excellent job in taking the club from the wilderness of the lower end of the Premier League table to top-four contenders and of course to the pinnacle of European football.

Villa did a good job in winning their opening match at Young Boys but it was a game they were expected to win because when they met, the Swiss champions had failed to win a game in 2024/25. That's even before adding the gulf in class and riches between the two teams.

That is why Bayern Munich will be a real test for the Villans, and a match that their fans will be wanting to see - those who could afford the absurd £94 ticket price that is.

Vincent Kompany has had an excellent start to his reign with the German giants. They are unbeaten in the Bundesliga with four wins from five, and then of course their obliteration of Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener.

This game will be a step up for both teams and the home advantage will be important if Villa are to come away from this game with anything.

I have gone for a 28/1 bet builder for this selection and it kicks off with a Bayern win. I do see Villa providing the visitors with a few challenges, but ultimately I think Bayern are just too strong for them. Looking at their depth in attacking areas alone, this is a squad capable of going all the way this season, but of course not if Real Madrid have anything to say about it.

Football Odds

Both teams to score is worth backing because Villa have some good attacking options of their own in the likes of Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Jhon Duran. They are a better team than Dinamo Zagreb, who managed to score two against Bayern, so the claret and blues should have no issue with finding the net, particularly on home soil in front of a sell-out crowd.

The next leg is over 3.5 goals, and with the quality on display, I reckon there will be no shortage of goals in B6. Bayern's Harry Kane already has four in Europe this campaign, while Michael Olise also bagged a brace last time out. I am expecting a lot of end-to-end action and I think these two sides have the quality to make this a high-scoring game, and one that I am expecting Bayern to emerge victorious from.

You can't have an entertaining game without some bookings so I have Villa's Amadou Onana to go into the book. The former Everton man has settled in quickly at his new club and has already had a big impact in Emery's system with two goals already in the Premier League and one against Young Boys in Europe.

The Belgian has also picked up two bookings, as his defensive midfield play often sees him fly in with challenges, not all of which are clean or legal. In the league, he has committed nine fouls in six games, so he is averaging around 2.41 per 90.

Up against the likes of Kane, Olise, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and more, he is going to be in for his toughest shift to date in a claret and blue shirt, and I think he will be forced into a number of fouls on Wednesday night and get punished for it.

Finally, I have Kane and Olise to score anytime. Striker Kane has four in this competition alone and 10 in all competitions. I have no doubt that he will score in this game because he is one of the best goalscorers in the world. Not to mention he has a good record against Villa from his time at Tottenham Hotspur, with eight goals in 13 appearances.

Olise is already looking sharp at Bayern following his summer arrival from Crystal Palace and he has already scored five across all competitions. His excellent dribbling and ability to find and exploit space has me thinking he can cause plenty of headaches for Villa's somewhat frail back line on Wednesday. I have both these Bayern stars to find the back of the net.
