Football Bet of the Day: Hammers can score in likely defeat

My football bet of the day for Wednesday, September 25 comes from the Carabao Cup clash at Anfield between Liverpool and West Ham United (20:00, live on Sky Sports Main Event).

The two sides met in last year's competition, with the Reds emerging as 5-1 winners, and the Hammers have failed to win in their last 10 visits to the red half of Merseyside, so they could be up against it here.

Liverpool vs West Ham Odds

Jurgen Klopp's final piece of silverware in charge of Liverpool was a record-extending 10th Carabao Cup.

The Reds crossed paths with Wednesday's opponents in the quarter-final stage, thrashing the Hammers 5-1 thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones (2), Cody Gakpo and the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah.

The bid for an 11th Carabao Cup crown begins against Julen Lopetegui's side this time around, and despite the qualms around Klopp's departure, the red half of Merseyside have seamlessly adapted to life under new manager Arne Slot, barring a shock loss at home to Nottingham Forest.

However, Liverpool quickly responded in perfect fashion with a victory over AC Milan in the Champions League, before comfortably dispatching Bournemouth at the weekend.

Football Odds

Meanwhile, West Ham have a miserable recent record at Anfield, and their recent form suggests that is unlikely to improve on Wednesday night.

As mentioned in the introduction, the Irons have failed to win in any of their last 10 visits to Anfield, and they're also on a winless run of three games, leaving them sitting in an unspectacular 14th place in the Premier League standings.

Jarrod Bowen's 88th-minute winner against Bournemouth last month secured the Hammers' place in the third round, as well as Wednesday's trip to Anfield, and West Ham also memorably got the better of Arsenal in the fourth round last year, perhaps offering some optimism of causing an upset.

Another glimmer of hope for West Ham is that Slot may opt to rotate his side given their schedule, and the Reds have shown some defensive frailties in recent weeks.

Forest stunned the Anfield faithful 1-0 just 10 days ago, while Milan scored first in the aforementioned victory in the Champions League. In addition, Bournemouth had the ball in the back of the net first on Saturday only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Lopetegui's side haven't been firing on all cylinders in front of goal this season- they've only scored more than one goal once, which came in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace - but I think they can get on the scoresheet on Wednesday night, especially against a rotated Liverpool backline.

I'm expecting Liverpool to notch multiple goals against the Hammers, though, en route to a straightforward home win.
