If you’ve drawn Run Wild Fred if your office pool and have just Googled his odds to find out what the chances are that you’ll walk into the office on Monday looking for the envelope of cash, then I’m afraid I can’t tell you the outlook is too bright on that front unless you can invent a time machine and go back a couple of years.

That is because back in 2022 when the horses all lined up for the start, Run Wild Fred was one of the top choices and went off at just 8/1. He would fall at the eighth and he’s not won a race since and, in all honesty, not looked remotely close bar a half-decent effort chasing home Galvin in a Grade 3 at Punchestown back in October of that year.

Since then, it has just been worse and worse, and his best result so far was a fifth-place finish in an average field. He has failed to even cross the line in his previous three starts, having been brought down and pulled-up twice by his jockey.

The last of those outings was at the Cheltenham Festival, where he raced in the Ultima but made absolutely no impact and was ridden towards the rear for the whole race until his rider decided enough was enough two fences from home.

There isn’t really much of a reason to pick this horse unless you like his silks, have a feeling, or just want to back your pick in a sweepstake. The recent form has been poor and there is no logical justification to think that it’ll suddenly turn around for the Grand National.
