There are many reasons you might back a horse in the Grand National. It could be that they are the name you’ve pulled out in the office sweepstake, you could like the name, the silks could be your favourite colours, but what if you had a long shot who had won all three times he’s finished a race at Aintree, available at three-figure odds?

This is where we are with the Peter Bowen-trained Mac Tottie, whose career has been average at best but when it comes to the outskirts of Liverpool, everything seems to fall into place.

He won the Grand Sefton back in 2021 on the Grand National course as a 20/1 shot and looked pretty comfortable in doing so. Next time out, he fell when looking good in the Becher but then wins in the Topham in 2022 and in a handicap on the Mildmay course on Boxing Day last year make it three wins from four at Aintree. And if you are looking to hang your hat on something for a big price, you could do an awful lot worse.

His two races since that victory have been - shall we say - less than stellar, finishing second-to-last in both and averaging a losing distance of 52-and-a-half lengths, but his form in the past two to three years has basically been woeful away from Aintree yet outstanding at this very track.

Whether he’s a win contender here, looking at the class of the field, that would be quite the stretch. But as an each-way long shot, I think he’ll see money.
