Hamilton Park Racecourse

Royal Ascot will be centre of attention once more on Wednesday but there are four more meetings slated across Britain this midweek, with Hamilton running alongside Ascot in the afternoon.

They race at the Scottish venue from 13:45-17:25, with seven races set to be run on ground forecast as 'good'. I've got a trio of contenders for punters to consider, for my Hamilton Park tips on Wednesday.

Hamilton Park Tips

  • 14:50 - Lucius Aurelius @ 9/2
  • 16:10 - John L Sullivan @ 7/4
  • 17:25 - Penelope's Sister @ 11/1

14:50 - Lucius Aurelius @ 9/2

Trainer Kevin Ryan boasts an excellent strike-rate at this course, with his 28 winners from 134 runners over the last five seasons coming in at 19 per cent with a tasty +34.50 profit to a level stake.

He's set to send a couple of runners north from his base in Thirsk in Yorkshire for this afternoon card and his best chance of getting on the scoresheet would appear to be LUCIUS AURELIUS in the Hamilton Park EBF Maiden Stakes over 6f, the third race on the card.

The Zoustar colt debuted over 5f here last month, going off an 8/1 chance and finishing third of five after getting outpaced inside the final furlong.

On that evidence, a step up in trip looks the way to go and that initial experience should stand to him now. The standard is set by Triple Charged on his run at Ayr in a decent maiden 16 days ago, though it's not a high bar and he'd had the benefit of a run

16:10 - John L Sullivan @ 7/4

Oisin Orr is a rider in form currently, boasting a handsome 20 per cent strike-rate in recent weeks from a half-century of rides.

Amongst those was JOHN L SULLIVAN, part of a Wetherby treble last midweek, with Orr simply oozing confidence in the plate as he cruised into contention and went clear to win with plenty in hand.

The Ten Sovereigns gelding was confirming the promise shown previously when he had chased home an easy winner over the same mile trip at the Yorkshire venue in late April.

That race worked out exceedingly well - the winner is 2-2 since at this track, latterly off 17lb higher and John L Sullivan was the fourth other subsequent winner to emerge from it.

He has a 6lb penalty to carry now, as does recent Musselburgh winner Rosenzoo for the Charlie Johnston team, but Orr's mount is still getting 8lb from the top-weight and he looked well ahead of his mark last time, so he's fancied to record another success.

17:25 - Penelope's Sister @ 11/1

Fanzone is the forecast market leader for concluding racingtv.com Handicap over an extended nine furlongs, but a 1-36 career strike-rate doesn't inspire confidence he will get the job done despite a couple of decent efforts at Musselburgh and Nottingham in recent starts.

Fellow veteran Hot Team also arrives in decent order, but perhaps PENELOPE'S SISTER can score for Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan, the top trainer/jockey combination at this track in recent seasons.

The War Command filly was having just her fourth start and first in 595 days when turning out over a mile at Ayr (good) at the start of May.

Understandably, Amie Waugh gave her a patient ride, but she still ran her best race to date when making some late inroads, beaten around four-lengths at the line.

She's had a nice break to get over that and goes up in trip here, with scope to snare a prize from this low rating if she builds on that effort with this experienced pilot taking over now.
