Farouk d’Alene Grand National Odds 2024: Big price outsider to look at

Farouk d’Alene was cross-entered both here and at the Irish Grand National but trainer Gordon Elliott decided that it was the Aintree edition of the race that would be the destination for this nine-year-old horse.

We are starting to very much get into the long-shot category when looking at the likes of Farouk d’Alene, but trainer Gordon Elliott would have seen some hopeful signs despite him being pulled up in the final stages of the Pertemps at Cheltenham back in March. He was very much in touch with the leaders three out before fading but that was enough for his connections to take a shot at the big race at Aintree.

He made it into the Pertemps field having finished second as an 18/1 shot on heavy ground in a qualifying race at Leopardstown back in December. That day the track was tough going but this horse showed that he has heart by staying on well and doing very well as an 18/1 shot.

We saw a very good year in 2021/22 ended by a fall in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices' Chase when, despite not jumping particularly well, he was making up the gap on the leader and it looked like there was every chance that despite not looking that good, he could be in it going down to the wire with eventual winner and favourite L’Homme Presse, so there is clearly something in this horse.

Before that, it had been two winners and the same number of runner-up finishes in his four outings over in Ireland, which saw his Racing Post Rating get all the way up to 162. Very much a wildcard pick this, and he certainly won’t be flying up the betting market but for those looking for a non no-hope long-shot, you could do an awful lot worse than backing this one.
