Euro 2024 is finally here! The opening game of this European Championships is an absolute blockbuster as hosts Germany take on Scotland in Munich (20:00). Scotland are playing in the opening game of a major tournament for the first time since France 1998, when they narrowly lost 2-1 to World Cup holders Brazil.

Now Steve Clarke’s men are looking to do something spectacular and shock the fancied host nation. They are 11/1 to win this one, so that shows the size of the task at hand, as they look to stun a Germany side that will fancy themselves to go far on home soil.

Below you can find my Germany vs Scotland Bet Builder Tip for this Euro 2024 opener.

Germany vs Scotland Bet Builder Tips

  • Germany to win
  • Scott McTominay and Kai Havertz to score

#PickYourPunt pays 18/1

Germany predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer, Kimmich, Tah, Rüdiger, Mittelstädt, Kroos, Andrich, Musiala, Gündogan, Wirtz, Havertz.

Scotland predicted starting XI (5-2-2-1): Gunn, Ralstone, Porteus, Hendry, Tierney, Robertson, McGregor, Gilmour, McGinn, McTominay, Adams.

Germany to win

Germany are likely to win this opening game, and they are heavy favourites to do so. I think it is an excellent place to start our #PickYourPunt, and in front of a partisan crowd, Julian Nagelsmann’s side should get the job done.

The Germans have really found some form of late and 2024 has been the year that Nagelsmann has finally found his feet with this squad. They’ve beaten France and the Netherlands recently, and are heading into this tournament having drawn with Ukraine and beaten Greece. I think they should top this group, and they have to win this opening game to get off to a positive start.

Scotland meanwhile have stuttered since qualifying for this tournament. Clarke’s men have only won one of their last nine matches, but they have played some top teams during that run, including England, France and the Netherlands. They will be competitive, but I think they will come up short in this opener.

Scott McTominay and Kai Havertz to score

I think we will be in for an entertaining encounter on Friday night, and both teams will find the net at some point. Germany have conceded goals in two of their last three matches, and eight out of their last 10 games looking further back. I think if Scotland are going to score, the most likely candidate is Scott McTominay.

The Manchester United midfielder is used in an attacking role for his country and will be used as a target for crosses and set pieces. He is likely to get close to Che Adams or whoever the striker is, and pick up on any loose balls. He’s a fantastic finisher, and scored seven goals in 10 Scotland appearances in 2023. I’m happy to pick him out as a goalscorer here.

Germany have also found their feet in front of goal, and Kai Havertz is expected to start as the number nine according to reports. He was tested at left-back for Germany in 2023, and that didn't work at all, but now he is doing well leading the line. He is expected to get the nod ahead of Niclas Fullkrug and should be able to finish off one of many attacks from the home nation.
