Alaves vs Atletico Madrid Prediction: Morata to strike in bounce-back victory

Atletico Madrid exited the Champions League in midweek, meaning returning to the competition next term is their only goal for the run-in. They have work to do in order to wrap up a top-four finish in La Liga, but they shouldn’t have too much trouble bypassing a struggling Alaves side on Sunday (KO, 17:30).

Aleksandar Sedlar is absent for Alaves, but the hosts have no new injury concerns and they are likely to shake things up after a 2-0 loss to Granada last time out.

Atletico Madrid are without the suspended Marcos Llorente, while Memphis Depay and Vitolo remain sidelined. Mario Hermoso made his return to the defence against Dortmund in midweek and he should hold on to his place in this clash.

It was a frustrating result for Diego Simeone’s side, who missed some great chances in the first encounter which could have put the tie to bed.

Atletico need to get over that defeat pretty quickly, as they’re just three points clear in fourth with Athletic Bilbao breathing down their neck. Fortunately, their return to league action pits them against an Alaves side who have won just once in their last nine matches.

The hosts have lost four of their last five starts, while they’ve been beaten in all four of their home clashes with the top six. They’ve lost all seven meetings with the top five this term, including a 2-1 defeat in the capital.

Atletico have won three of their last four and they should prove too strong. Back them to pick up a victory at 19/20, while a 2-0 win appeals at 15/2.

Alaves have lost to nil in three of their four home clashes with the top six. The hosts have been beaten to nil in four of their last five starts and they should fear an Atletico side who are creating chances, scoring at least twice in each of their last four.

Alvaro Morata is a standout scoring option for the visitors, as he has 14 La Liga strikes this term, opening the scoring on seven occasions. He found the net when these two sides met earlier this term and the forward can strike first in a clash with an Alaves side who offer very little going forward.
