Tennis Betting Tips: Shelton to prevail in three sets

I head into Tuesday quite pleased as two of my three selections landed on Monday, and I am one step closer to landing my first clean sweep. Hopefully today will be the day as my attention turns to Cincinatti, with both the ATP and WTA events taking place simultaneously. 

Once again I have picked out three markets from three matches taking place to form my tennis betting tips for the day, and you will find them below.

Alex Michelsen to beat Tallon Griekspoor 2-1 @ 3/1

Alex Michelsen did not participate at the Olympics, opting to head to North America straight after Wimbledon, and this decision has paid off. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a final at Newport, followed by a quarter-final at the Citi Open.

The American is already off to a positive start in Ohio, having navigated himself past Zizou Bergs and Mackenzie McDonald. I feel as though momentum and confidence are both with him, unlike his opponent.

Tallon Griekspoor didn't have much fun in Paris at the Olympics, and he returned to clay after his appearances at Wimbledon. He has won just one match since featuring in SW19 at Bastad and Paris combined, so his confidence is going to be quite low heading to Cincinnati. The Dutchman has played just one match on hard court this summer at Montreal, in which he lost to Lorenzo Sonego.

Griekspoor will be clinging on to the fact that he won the only previous meeting between the pair heading into Tuesday's match, but I think Michelsen can get one over on his opponent. Expect this one to go all the way.

Ben Shelton to beat Reilly Opelka 2-1 @ 5/2

Ben Shelton is still discovering himself on the ATP tour, as he continues to find his best tennis style. Having reached the semi-finals of the US Open last year, he has certainly been on the right track. It will take some time before he is a constant threat on the Grand Slam stage, but he will be eyeing up more success at Flushing Meadows later this month.

The American returns to Cincinnati after bowing out at the second round last year, so he will be hoping for much more joy this time around, especially with more experiences behind him.

His opponent, Reilly Opelka, has been impressive since returning to the tour. He reached the semi-finals at Newport and has enjoyed some other victories after that run. Opelka has had injury problems in the past, so the fact that he has so far managed to stay fit is huge for him.

Both players will try and take control of this match with their strong serves, so I suspect we could be in for a few tiebreaks here. In that scenario, I have to favour Shelton, because he has been quite strong in such situations of late. I am backing him to come out on top in three sets.

Donna Vekic to beat Ashlyn Krueger 2-1 @ 3/1

Considering this is Donna Vekic's first match on hard court since March, you may think I am very brave to back her here. However, Vekic has been playing some excellent tennis in the last few weeks. She reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and has since followed this up with an Olympic silver medal in Paris.

She comes up against a tough opponent in Ashlyn Krueger, who defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in qualifying. Given the fact that Osaka tends to play her best tennis on this surface, this was a huge upset and her Croatian opponent has to be prepared.

Both players like to play aggressively so we could be treated to a spectacle in Cincinnati. However, I am sticking with my guns and backing Vekic to win in three sets as I think her achievements in recent months give her the edge over the 20-year-old American.
