Roland garros french open tennis

Day three of the French Open sees the return of Novak Djokovic, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion getting his Roland Garros title defence underway against home hope Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Djokovic is unlikely to have too many concerns as he bids to send out a statement while his final victim from last season, Casper Ruud, kickstarts his campaign against Brazil’s Felipe Meligeni Alves.

It is also an informative day in the women’s draw as second seed Aryna Sabalenka and world number four Elena Rybakina, believed to be Iga Swiatek’s biggest title threat, get their French Open campaigns up and running.

Tuesday's French Open Tips

  • Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to beat David Goffin @ 4/5
  • Tallon Griekspoor to win 3-0 v Mackenzie McDonald @ 9/10
  • Yulia Putintseva to beat Sloane Stephens @ 8/11

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to beat David Goffin @ 4/5

French tennis looks in a healthy place with Arthul Fils one promising youngster coming through the ranks, but Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is another that looks set for a bright future.

Perricard claimed his maiden ATP Tour title in Lyon last time out, overcoming three established top-50 performers in Lorenzo Sonego, Alexander Bublik and Tomas Martin Etcheverry on his way to success.

That is a remarkable feat from the 20-year-old, who has also clinched four titles on the Challenger Tour, and suggests that with the right guidance he could go even higher than his current world ranking of 66.

Perricard stands at 6ft 7in tall and boasts a hefty serve which should see him past David Goffin, whose powers are on the wane.

The Belgian, now at world number 115 having once been at seven, has lost six of his last nine matches while three of his last four trips to the French Open have ended at the first hurdle.

Tallon Griekspoor to win 3-0 v Mackenzie McDonald @ 9/10

This should be easy work for Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who is fancied to record a straight-sets victory against a fragile Mackenzie McDonald lacking match sharpness.

McDonald has played only six competitive matches this season, losing on each occasion, and has played only three times since the Australian Open in January.

The American’s last two clay-court matches have seen him lose 7-6 6-0 to Roberto Bautista Agut in Bordeaux before a 6-2 6-2 hiding from Aleksandar Vukic in Lyon, which suggests world number 25 Griekspoor can stamp his authority.

Yulia Putintseva to beat Sloane Stephens @ 8/11

Yulia Putintseva outclassed Sloane Stephens in their recent encounter in Rome, easing to a 6-3 6-2 success, and she can frank that form in the opening round of the French Open.

Stephens was runner-up at the French Open in 2018 and she evidently thrives under these conditions, but there has been little positive to take from her recent performances.

The American lost her last four matches in straight sets and she faces another tough test against Putintseva, who has suffered only three defeats in her last 11 clay-court matches.
