History, Location and Format

The English Open is the tenth running of this first Home Nations event of the season, having first been added to the WST Tour schedule in 2016.

The tournament has been held at the Brentwood Leisure Centre for the last four seasons and this year's event runs from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st September. The event will be broadcast on TNT Sports and discovery+ in the UK.

The format sees 128 players take part with the first round seeing players seeded 65-96 take on 97-128. The winners will then play 33-64 in the second round and then the top 32 seeds enter the competition at the third round stage. The matches are played over seven frames until the quarter finals, when it becomes best-of-nine. This is then followed by best-of-11 in the semi-finals and a best-of-17 final.

This tournament has been won by only three players in the last six seasons: Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson.

The defending champion is Robertson, who beat China's Wu Yize 9-7 in the 2024 final.

English Open Snooker Odds

2 pts Neil Robertson each-way (1/2 - 2 Places) @ 8/1

The 43-year-old is currently fighting back to the top of the sport, and he has left no stone unturned for success, employing Joe Perry as coach and a team of other experts in his corner.

For many years, the Australian and Perry forged a strong friendship from the moment a teenage Robertson arrived in England, with barely a penny in his pocket to pursue his dream.  Perry immediately took him under his wing and offered him a place to live along with being his regular practice partner. There is no doubt that their modern-day alliance is already bearing fruit, and it is only three seasons ago that Perry himself won the Welsh Open.

Choosing to retire from the sport on his own terms, Perry still has his finger on the pulse and looking at how Robertson’s elite break building stats are not quite as good as they once were, but he is somehow getting better results, it looks as though Perry has brought a slightly better balance to the game of one of the sport’s most outstanding break builders ever.

Interestingly, Robertson has three times won an event as a reigning champion, the 2009 Grand Prix in 2010, the Wuxi Classic in 2013 and 2014, and most recently, the prestigious Tour Championship in 2021 and 2022.

With a comfortable draw in the opening rounds of Quarter 1, Neil Robertson looks a solid each-way selection to defend a title for the fourth time in his career.

1 pts Zhang Anda each-way (1/2 - 2 Places) @ 33/1

After many years as a 'journeyman professional', Zhang Anda’s shock breakthrough two seasons ago came here in Brentwood when he reached the final. In the process he led Judd Tump by four frames in the final 7-3, only to lose 7-9 to the world #1.

That disappointment did not affect Anda but he built his confidence to a new level, when at the International Championship a few weeks later in his native China, he won his maiden ranking title.  Many fans were surprised that a decade after his Crucible debut, Anda could find such a surge in form and confidence, but within the sport he has long been known as one of the more accomplished breakbuilders and tough opponents.

Once again, the market is forgetting the diminutive thirty-three-year-old Zhang Anda, who is attractively priced given his solid form of the current campaign and a return to a venue that holds the fondest of memories.

0.5 pts Zhou Yuelong each-way (1/2 - 2 Places) @ 66/1

Zhou Yuelong has spent almost two years bouncing back from his Scottish Open semi-final loss to Gary Wilson, after having him needing snookers.

That sort of loss takes time to recover from, but the signs are there that the twenty-seven-year-old is ready to reclaim his place at the top of the sport, with a maximum 147 break in qualifying for the Xian Grand Prix last week.

These Home Nations events have often seen Zhou Yuelong perform to significant effect, and he was the runner-up in the Northern Ireland Open of 2022, as well as that deep run in Scotland.

With a Chinese World Champion and the level of his compatriots' performances reaching an all-time high, Zhou Yuelong looks ready to remind snooker fans what an elite performer he is.
