Gomez Jnr vs McGregor Predictions: Son of a legend steps out of the shadow

Gomez gets right back to it after a storming start to his 2026. The son of the legendary ‘Manchester Mexican’ Michael Gomez Snr stopped Jordan Flynn in three rounds back in February. That rip-roaring victory in front of a home crowd at the Co-op Live Arena steered Gomez out of the choppy waters that threatened to drown him over the past couple of years.

In October 2024, Gomez pulled out of a fight with Reece Belotti on the night itself. The Manchester man was withdrawn with an illness, but that didn’t stop the armchair experts on social media decrying a perceived lack of bravery on his part.

But Gomez held no fear, fighting Belotti for the British and Commonwealth super featherweight titles the following February. The rescheduled date restored little more than pride for Gomez, as Belotti retained his belts with a 10th round stoppage. Gomez got back up from two knockdowns in a furious night’s action, proving his heart is not in question if nothing else. 

The Flynn fight in February was a must-win contest. Gomez was victorious in some style. Now the flamboyant Mancunian can fight on in search of domestic honours. 

Gomez is 31 years old, the same age as Gomez Snr was when he retired. The elder Michael Gomez left the sport with several headliners at the Manchester Arena under his belt, as well as British and WBU titles and wins over the likes of future world champion Alex Arthur. 

The younger Gomez has not reached those heights. It is often the curse of boxing progeny. Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn have never secured world titles in the shadow of their legendary fathers. ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazer’s son Marvis was a punching bag to the best heavyweights of the 1980s. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will be remembered more for that farce with Jake Paul than his attempts to match the insurmountable achievements of Julio Snr.

But then what is success? Gomez has gone 22-2 and has lifted area and English titles along the way. He has beaten the likes of Flynn, teak-tough gatekeeper Kane Baker and undefeated hope Levi Giles along the way. That is a better career than the vast majority of boxers can look back on when they retire.

A win over McGregor would be another fine chapter in Gomez’s book. The 29-year-old Scot has mixed at fringe world level. McGregor was stopped in five rounds of an IBO title bout against Erik Robles Ayala. His only other defeat came in four sessions against then-undefeated Nathaniel Collins.

McGregor is a former European bantamweight champion, claiming the belt in a searing first-round knockout of Karim Guerfi. He defended it once, stopping 32-0 Frenchman Vincent Legrand in four scintillating stanzas in Belfast.

McGregor moved up in weight after that victory, visiting super bantamweight before going on to beat world ranked Isaac Lowe at featherweight. This move up to lightweight feels like a big step, though McGregor has boxed at the weight in six-rounders in the past. That suggests it is closer to the weight he walks around at than the 126-pound featherweight limit.

Lots of intrigue, then, for a 10-round contest at the Keepmoat. Gomez seeks to affirm his individuality. McGregor battles to make inroads at a new weight. This one could turn a few heads as the crowd gets settled for the main event.

Gomez Jnr vs McGregor Prediction

Gomez aced his lightweight audition in stopping Flynn. McGregor’s best work was at featherweight. While Gomez is not yet a fully-fledged 135-pounder, he looked good at the weight last time out.

McGregor is taking an almighty gamble and I’m not sure it works out for him. The Scotsman is always game and I reckon this fight will excite, but I expect a Gomez win at 4/5.
