Super Rugby Pacific's bottom two teams meet in Auckland on Saturday (KO, 05:35) as Moana Pasifika host the Waratahs. Both sides have something to play for, with this being the hosts' final home game of the regular season before they close their campaign away at the Crusaders.

It is also the Tahs' 400th match in Super Rugby and the first since the club confirmed that coach Darren Coleman will not be staying on beyond the 2024 season. Both sides retain narrow hopes of making the play-offs but come into Saturday's match on the back of four defeats, and it could be a mighty scrap at Mount Smart Stadium.

Team News

Moana Pasifika have made one change from last Friday's 32-24 defeat to the Hurricanes. Scrum-half Aisea Halo has been promoted from the bench and will partner fellow Tonga international William Havili in the playmaking positions.

The Waratahs' season has been hit hard by injuries and on-loan prop Enrique Pieretto is their latest absentee.

Props Harry Lloyd and Micheal Scott make their debuts in the run-on side and on the bench, respectively, while Ned Hanigan's return in the back-row offsets the neck injury suffered by Lachlan Swinton.

Tane Edmed starts at fly-half, while Izaia Perese comes in on the right wing.

Moana Pasifika are 8/11 to win the match, with Waratahs 5/4 and the draw 18/1.

The pair's head-to-head is 1-1, with the Tahs winning the first meeting in 2022 26-20 and Saturday's hosts getting revenge with a 33-24 success last season in Sydney.

A home victory by 6-10 points inclusive is 6/1, with the visitors to win by the same scoreline available at 13/2.

Both sides have endured underwhelming campaigns with the Waratahs perpetually in transition.

While the Brumbies, Chiefs, Reds and, even at times, the Force, have gotten themselves together, the Sydneysiders have fallen behind and will embark on another new era with a fresh coaching team in 2025.

Coleman's opposite number, Tana Umaga, is one year into his three-season deal. His side has shown signs of improvement and he will be looking to reward a decent Auckland crowd.

Two of their three wins this season have come at home, while two of that trio have also come against Australian teams. They won 22-14 at the Force in March before beating the Reds 17-14 in April.

The Waratahs have won just once in 2024 - April's extra-time victory over the Crusaders - and conclude their campaign next Friday with a home game against the play-off-bound Reds.

However, they should fancy themselves in attack. Moana Pasifika's tally of 430 points conceded is the worst in this season's Super Rugby competition, while the hosts have also scored fewer points than any other team.

They are still favoured, though, with a home win the option and a favourable price available for it to come in by between one and 12 points.
