Northampton Saints vs Castres Prediction: Saints to make light of French visitors

The knockout stages of the 2025/26 European Champions Cup kicks off on Friday night with Northampton Saints welcoming Castres to Franklin's Gardens. Saints, who qualified as pool runners-up to Bordeaux, their conquerors in last season's final, are red-hot favourites to see off a Castres side who finished third in their section.

Team News
Saints have been rocked by a season-ending injury to tighthead Trevor Davison, who came off after just 12 minutes of last week's win over Saracens. He will undergo knee surgery.
Elsewhere, England fly-half Fin Smith (concussion) is also out, joining Alex Mitchell, Alex Coles, George Hendy and Edoardo Todaro on the sidelines.
The hosts have made six changes to their starting XV in total, with JJ van der Mescht coming into the second row and Fraser Dingwall starting at centre.
Fly-half Louis Le Brun has been registered by Castres, seven months after rupturing a knee ligament, though he won't be involved at Franklin's Gardens.
Fiji centre Andrea Cocagi is also out while lock Tom Staniforth has flown back to Australia.
Northampton Saints vs Castres Odds
Not many are looking past a home win here, with Northampton a 1/9 shot and Castres chalked up at 11/2, though the Saints did ease in the betting on the strength of a strong visiting team being announced.
Northampton Saints -18 @ 4/5
Premiership champions Northampton are barely putting a foot wrong as they strive to reclaim the Champions Cup, 26 years after their previous triumph.
Beaten finalists last season, Saints are determined to go one better and it looks like only a very good team is going to beat them.
And Castres, on all available evidence, are not that team.
Bobbing along in mid-division in the Top 14, their only win in the last month was against the division's bottom side, Montauban.
They limped into the last 16 by finishing third in their pool, losing both their showdowns with English teams, 34-14 at Gloucester and 43-20 at home to Bath.
Losing by 20 points to the Cherry & Whites and 23 points to Bath shows something of a gulf so Saints can successfully give 21.5 points on the handicap on Friday night.
Northampton's only loss in the tournament so far was at Bordeaux in a repeat of last year's final.
Aside from that they have won eight of their last nine, are unbeaten at Franklin's Gardens, and score points for fun as demonstrated against Castres last season. They played the French side twice, winning 38-8 and 51-16 in home games.
And Castres were probably a better side then than they are now.

Archie McParland anytime tryscorer @ 21/20
Scrum-half Archie McParland is on a hot try-scoring streak at the moment with eight tries in his last six appearances.
The pressure from the home team is going to be relentless and McParland should be able to find his way onto the scoresheet once again.
