Saints legend Paul Sculthorpe previews the Betfred Super League champions’ visit to Wakefield Trinity at 3pm on Sunday 3 September.

Wakefield Trinity vs St Helens Prediction

  • St Helens to win by 18+ points @ 6/4

With only four rounds of the regular fixtures to go, it’s certainly got very interesting at the top of the Betfred Super League table.

I don’t think anyone saw that result coming at the Stade Gilbert Brutus last weekend. I’m obviously talking about Wigan’s 34-0 demolition of league leaders Catalans.

The visitors completely dominated the game from start to finish, and as a result join Saints in second on 32 points – only two points behind the French outfit.

Huge credit must go to the visitors, with coach Matt Peet saying it was his side’s best performance of the season… but you do have to question the approach of the Dragons.

There’s three games on Friday which, by the time this preview goes live will have played out, and two on Saturday – while we have to wait till Sunday to see the mighty Saints in action.

We go into the game against bottom club Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue on the back of a convincing 34-4 win over Trinity’s relegation-threatened neighbours Castleford Tigers. It was one-way traffic for most of the game, with Saints’ elusive right edge scoring all but one of the tries.

One of those, Mark Percival, celebrated a great performance by scoring his 100th career try and passing the 1000 points milestone.

Percy made his Saints debut in 2013, and this year celebrated his testimonial year. Everyone knows I’m a huge fan of the guy, not only an outstanding player but a fantastic, humble human being.

On the field you have to admire the way Mark plays – a fierce competitor who carries the ball as hard as anyone in the competition and also a smart and skilful strike player who can cause no end of trouble for opposition defences.

Anyway, back to Sunday’s game. I’m backing Saints to continue their march to the top of the table with a convincing win by 18 points or more.
