Titans dragons

The two worst teams in the NRL season so far battle it out to get off the mark at the Cbus Super Stadium on Sunday when the Gold Coast Titans meet the St George Illawarra Dragons (17:15 local, 08:15 BST, Watch NRL).

Both sides have suffered a trio of defeats going into this encounter, and that will make my Titans vs Dragons predictions difficult. They follow below with full match odds from Betfred and the latest team news.

Titans vs Dragons Odds

How do you show great conviction in a team who have lost every game so far this season? The answer is that you don’t.

Betfred have the Titans as only marginal favourites for this one at 5/6, with the Dragons a 21/20 shot. The draw, at 16/1, looks appealing.

The handicap market says it all, with St George offered only 1.5 points as an advantage. They’re 10/11 against that backdrop, with the hosts still 5/6.

Team News

Despite their poor start, it’s a settled Titans line-up that Josh Hannay sends out for this one.

Jayden Campbell makes it in the halves having left the field early against the Cowboys when he was clothes-lined by Tom Chester as the Gold Coast broke late on.

Jaylan De Groot, Oliver Pascoe and Jett Liu are added to the initial squad as reserves but there’s no expectation that any of the trio will make the final 19.

Rugby League Odds

Toby and Ryan Couchman are both out for the Dragons. Must be a twin thing.

The former is out due to concussion, while Ryan is suspended.

Elsewhere, Hamish Stewart moves to lock as Blake Lawrie comes into the front row. Shane Flangan has called up Hame Sele to the bench, while Mat Feagai drops out having been an unused squad member last week at Parramatta.

Dragons by 1-12 @ 12/5

I was absolutely blown away by the Titans’ first-half effort against the Dolphins a couple of weeks ago. And when they went up 14-0 early in the second stanza it looked like they might just be the real deal.

They weren’t, of course. They shipped three tries in 20 minutes to lose that game and then added a 30-16 defeat at the Cowboys to that opening day half-century reverse to the Sharks.

This is their first appearance on home territory, but it will take more than a relocation to get them some points if most of their displays to date are anything to go by.

The Dragons haven’t been an awful lot better, but they have at least looked that bit more potent with ball in hand.

And that ought to be just enough to get St George over the line, so I’m taking the one-to-two-score margin at 12/5.

Dragons Over 25.5 Points @ 10/11

One thing that should be guaranteed is points, since both defences have been pretty rotten.

The Dragons have conceded 91 and the Titans 98 in three rounds thus far, and the amount of penalties and set restarts these two have given away would make any coach blush.

St George have crossed for nine tries to this point, and I reckon they have enough strike among their outside backs to get over at least five times against a Titans line that even a failed Lambwath youth winger from the 1990s would fancy their chances of scoring against. In fact, I definitely do fancy my chances against.
