Team News

The margin of victory for Warrington in this one will depend a lot on how many changes head coach Sam Burgess opts to make.

He shouldn't feel the need to rest players given Warrington have played one fewer Super League game than their opponents thanks to Hull KR's involvement in the World Club Challenge, but I would nonetheless anticipate that this will be a fixture to give some fringe players an early opportunity in 2026.

Burgess makes half-a-dozen alterations from the squad who won at York last weekend to make it three wins from three in the league.

One of those changes is enforced, with in-form young full-back Cai Taylor-Wray having picked up a hamstring injury in North Yorkshire. The other five alterations see some senior stars given the weekend off, namely forwards Ben Currie, Luke Yates, Sam Stone, Liam Byrne and half-back Marc Sneyd.

This means opportunities for the likes of former Leeds forward James Bentley - who suffered an injury a minute into his Wire debut against Sheffield in the last round  - and young half-backs Leon Hayes and Ewan Irwin. Other squad forwards set to feature are Max Wood, Ewan Smith and Luke Thomas, while Jordy Crowther has been confirmed by Burgess as another player who needs some minutes under his belt.

Burgess used his media briefing this week to say "we want to win, but..." when hinting at his team selection. The inference there is that this will be a Warrington win, with an under-strength team, so I would advise taking that into account in the handicap betting.

As for Goole, they remain very much an unknown quantity as the sport's newest team, but led by Burgess's former England team-mate Scott Taylor they produced a big shock to knock Halifax Panthers out in the last round. Goole have lost four of their six games so far in the Championship however, so even a second-string Warrington side should have far too much here.

Goole have three injuries of note, and will be without Oli Morgan, Jack Coventry and Nick Staveley but Josh Guzdek should feature after missing that Halifax win through injury. Head coach Taylor has used his contacts book to build some Super League experience in his squad, with the likes of Liam Watts, Grand Final-winner Brett Ferres and former St Helens and Hull FC forward Andre Savelio all included.

Goole Vikings vs Warrington Wolves Odds

Don't go looking for Warrington in the Match Result market. They're 1/1000!

The Vikings are 28/1 for the win, and the same price is available for a draw in normal time.

Goole are given 58.5 points' start on the two-way handicap, and are 5/6 to keep the score within that range. The Wire are 20/21 to blast through that barrier.

First-Half Handicap: Warrington -27.5 @ 5/6

There won't be any cup romance for Goole this weekend, but if they can show the same kind of spirit that humbled Halifax then they can at least ask a few questions of what should be a much-changed Warrington.

The switch of this fixture from Goole to the Wolves' stadium makes it even harder for the Vikings of course, but it will be a great experience for their squad in building for the future.

There is no point looking at the head-to-heads here as there aren't any - these two have never met before. But I've seen every Warrington game at close quarters this year and it feels like they mean business. Bringing in former England coach Steve McNamara alongside Burgess in the coaching set-up was a terrific call in my opinion, and I don't expect standards to drop in this contest.

So, much like a couple of other cup ties this weekend, it is Warrington against the handicap. With the marker at 60 points it feels like a match-up very heavily dependent on the Wolves team selection. If this was full-strength Warrington against Goole I would be expecting the Wolves to score at a point a minute and would happily take the -60.

But the expected rotation, along with a likely lower attendance and more muted atmosphere, makes me a little more hesitant. I'm looking at the home side to start strongly though and put this game to bed, and as such the first-half handicap could be the way to go.
