Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Odds

There’s never a dull moment where St Helens RLFC are concerned!

And this week has been no different, unfortunately not for the better.

News recently broke that one of our best players will play his last game in the Red V at the end of the 2025 Betfred Super League campaign.

Morgan Knowles, whom I must say is playing some outstanding football this season, is moving Down Under to join former Saints boss Kristian Woolf at NRL side, the Dolphins.

It was absolutely no shock that Morgs would be a target in Australia. I think the way he plays he’s made for the NRL. However, I’m sure before he departs the Saints, he’ll be looking to sign off with more silverware, in what is his testimonial year.

Unfortunately, that silverware is looking more challenging this last couple of weeks. On Friday, we went down 14-12 to Warrington in a ding-dong encounter at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Saints, I thought were the best team on the night, dominating attacking field position, metres with the ball, and line breaks. But unfortunately we also dominated errors made, and it was that that cost Saints the victory.

The home side just couldn’t find a way to convert all that pressure into points. I do though have to credit the Wire defensive efforts. They fought and scrambled all night.

The game changer, despite all the Saints pressure came from, of course Warrington debutant Mark Sneyd.

Known mainly for his outstanding kicking game, the crafty scrum-half found a gap in the Saints defence to slide a banana grubber kick through for the on-running George Williams to collect and score.

Warrington were never to go behind again, and it was Sneyd who managed his side superbly, picking up the POTM in his opening game for the Wolves.

Watching the Saints attack, despite a lot more air with the ball, I thought again we again lacked involvement and threat from our half-backs.

Tristan Sailor again was very quiet. In the last three weeks we’ve hardly seen that running game that lit up Betfred Super League in the opening few weeks. For me, his first thought needs to be ‘run’ , that will then create opportunities and space for those around him.

Other than Mark Percival, who was in my opinion probably the best player on the park, we lacked that ruthless execution to convert chances into points, and again some of Saints last tackle kicks left a lot to be desired.

However, there will be a lot of positives taken from the game. Defensively, like Wire I thought we looked solid. The forward pack have really led from the front so far this season, and that man Morgan Knowles right up at the front!

This was the first the first match in a 30-day trilogy between the two teams, who have been drawn together in the quarter-finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup in just over a week, before coming together again in Super League a fortnight later.

Both teams will be desperate to be in the hat for the semi-finals, and with Wigan already out and a Hull derby drawn, both will fancy their chances of silverware. It’s imperative though that Saints continue to build cohesion and confidence in their attack.

Elsewhere in the Betfred Super League, Wigan look like they still have a Vegas hangover. After being dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Hull FC, they were beaten 12-10 by the Leeds Rhinos. Meanwhile, Hull KR continue to be the team to beat. The Robins sit top of the Betfred Super League pile, and still the only undefeated side. Last weekend they put Leigh to the sword by 30-0.

This has certainly changed title sponsors Betfred’s Grand final outcome odds! Wigan remain the 13/10 favourites with Hull KR at 7/2 while Saints and Wire are 11/2 with Leeds at 12/1.

Next up for the Saints is a trip across The Channel to take on Catalans Dragons on Saturday evening. Betfred traders are struggling to split the sides, at 10/11 and 20/21 respectively.

It's always a tough place to go, Perpignan, and we'll have to be at our very best to get both points. I can see us edging it by a narrow margin - try 1-12 points at 23/10.

Finally, Saints Chairman Eamonn McManus didn’t pull any punches about the current state of the sport, in a recent interview.

He demands big changes from the powers that be to make the sport far more financially stable than it currently is.

As I said on Sky at Friday's game, for me the sport needs a strong leadership from business-minded people, who’ll make decisions for the good of the game - not letting clubs vote on what works best for their own agenda.

Eamonn did support the temporary reinstatement of previous CEO Nigel Wood, who left his position in 2017. I’m not so sure. I think that ship has sailed and it doesn’t look good on the sport's governing body. The sport needs new ideas, investment and audiences to back up the best sport in the world.
