Catalans dragons vs castleford tigers

After defeat against Wigan in Paris, Catalans Dragons return to the more familiar setting of the Stade Gilbert Brutus on Saturday (6pm BST, TNT Sports 2) for a home game with a Castleford side looking to bounce back from a defeat of their own.

It is eighth against 10th as these two inconsistent teams go at it in the Perpignan sun, both still harbouring ambitions of threatening the playoff places at the end of the season. Below are my Catalans Dragons vs Castleford Tigers predictions, alongside all the latest team news and match odds.

Catalans Dragons vs Castleford Tigers Odds

Dragons boss John Cartwright brought back some familiar faces last week but loses two key men for this one.

Winger Matty Russell drops out with skipper Ben Garcia also missing out. Leo Darrelatour and Alexis Lis - who was dropped last week - are the men to come in. Tommy Makinson was back in the squad last week but didn't feature, so would seem the likely replacement to start on the wing for Russell.

Team News

Wakefield had England winger Tom Johnstone back in the squad for that thrilling late win over Rovers last week, and boss Darryl Powell makes three changes for the visit of Wigan.

Jazz Tevaga is banned, and injury rules out match-winner Mason Lino and centre Corey Hall. Will Tate missed out last week to accommodate Johstone's return but is back in the squad, as is full-back Max Jowitt in a timely boost. Charlie Abraham also comes in.

Rugby League Odds

Cas boss Ryan Carr has only named a 20-man squad but has young forward George Hirst back from suspension, while new signing Jack Brown is poised for his debut after moving from Hull KR.

Brock Greacen has been in good scoring form but he is ruled out through concussion protocols and Jack Ashworth is also absent.

Full-back Phoenix Laulu-Togaga'e started the season as a Dragons player before moving home to Cas to be closer to his family - he will come up against his former club.

Handicap 3-way Catalans Dragons -14 @ 7/5

You probably won't find two more infuriating teams to predict than these two this season. The Dragons were well beaten by Wigan in Paris despite scoring three tries of their own, and their only win since the middle of April has come against lowly York.

Yet that April win was against Warrington which shows how good they can be.

Castleford seem to share the hot and cold gene too. The Tigers lost at home to Leigh last week - with our -8 handicap steer landing perfectly in the Leopards' 10-point victory - but the week before that they put 30 points on St Helens in a stunning five-try win, backing up victory over York the week before.

So there is absolutely a chance for Cas to come and get a result in this one. I just find them far too inconsistent to back against a Dragons team who are always a different beast at the Brutus.

Cas haven't travelled well yet to France this year, losing out by 12 points down in Toulouse early on in the campaign. And the omens aren't great for this one either, with Catalans having won their last seven straight home games against the Tigers, including 38-4 last season and 40-14 the season before.

So if this one follows logic and result head-to-heads then Catalans on the handicap feels the wise pick, although if it does get a bit interesting then a home win by 1-12 points offers better value at 21/10.

Jason Qareqare anytime tryscorer @ 6/5

The Dragons have great strike threat and I have been banging on about full-back Charlie Staines a lot this season. He caught my eye on his Dragons debut and the Aussie has since gone from being excellent value in the anytime market to far shorter odds to score. Indeed he is the most likely scorer in this one with Betfred at 4/5, with Makinson on the wing at the same price.

The one bit of reliability in the Castleford team of late has been red-hot Jason Qareqare who is attracting a lot of interest given his try-scoring form.

The winger scored again last week to take his tally to nine for the season - five of those have come in the last three games.

Wingers are like strikers in football - they thrive on confidence and when a scoring run starts it can feel like the easiest game in the world. I am backing Qareqare to finish off another chance or two in this one.
