Wembley Stadium Betfred Challenge Cup Final

At Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon (14:00), Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves meet in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final 2024.

Rugby league legend Paul Sculthorpe has shared his predictions for the huge clash, which will be aired live on BBC One.

Betfred Challenge Cup Final 2024 Predictions

  • Wigan by 1-12 points @ 9/5

Before the dress rehearsal in the Betfred Super League last weekend, my head said a Wigan victory against my former club Warrington.

However, I'm not nearly as confident after two key Warriors players - Adam Keighran and Tyler Dupree - were handed three-match bans after misdemeanours on Saturday.

Also, winger Liam Marshall spent large parts of the second-half nursing a knee injury and would be another significant hole in Matt Peet's side.

On the other hand, Warrington coach Sam Burgess not only rested the majority of his first-choice squad, but he'll be boosted by the gutsy performance from the young side he put out at the Halliwell Jones.

Peet was first to applaud the young opposition - and on the flip side he was critical of his team who were off the pace.

One player who did perform well and will be taking his place in Sam’s starting 13 on Saturday is Josh Drinkwater.

He was overlooked from the start of the season, with Leon Heyes preferred to partner George Williams in the halves - but since Heyes was unfortunately sidelined for the rest of the term, Drinkwater has turned in some outstanding performances.

He provided a try and two assists with the boot on Saturday and will be a key figure for the Wolves this weekend if they are to lift the trophy.

The Wire ought to be confident of doing so, but once those players walk out of that famous tunnel on Saturday, previous results mean little.

In truth, I’m still not sure how it will go. The big question regarding Warrington is: can they do it on the big stage? That's been their downfall over the last decade.

We know Wigan can. They’ve proven it year on year. I think in Bevan French and Jai Field they have two of the most exciting players in the world of rugby league - two superstars who can win any game with a moment of magic.

For me, that superior big-game experience is what's edging it for the Warriors. I can't see the margin being too wide, so I think Wigan by 1-12 points is the play.

I must sign off on a much more sombre note as it's been an incredibly sad week for St Helens and rugby league as a whole.

On Tuesday we said goodbye to the lovely Christine Hesketh. She was our longest-serving member of staff with just shy of 40 years service in the lottery, superstore and ticket departments. She will be sadly missed.

We also lost a true inspiration both on and off the field in my good friend Rob Burrow, who lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Rob constantly defied the odds during his playing career, using what people thought was his weakness as his super power. An out-and-out competitor, he became one of the most successful players in the British game, often proving a thorn in the Saints side.

However, it was his sheer determination to fight a cruel, incurable disease following his 2019 diagnosis that truly inspired the nation.

Rob and his supporting team have changed the landscape for MND sufferers and the Rob Burrow Centre for MND will only help to try and find a cure for this horrendous disease.

Sleep well, my friend.
