A pensioner punter's pet chihuahua is normally centre of attention at his favourite Betfred shop in Wales.

For Gringo only lets the female staff near him and barks furiously if any men dare try and stroke him. But the tiny pooch's laugh-a-minute antics have now taken a backseat thanks to his master Paul Hughes' amazing win on the horses.

Today's Horse Races

Retired building site labourer Paul, aged 70 won a whopping £40,144 from a 50p each-way 10-fold accumulator.

He actually won £37,058 but his windfall was boosted thanks to the Betfred Best Odds Guaranteed promotion after all his selections at Down Royal, Wexford and Fontwell were placed.

Paul took an hour before choosing Timmy Tuesday, Favori De Champdou and Light Keeper at Lisburn's Down Royal, Speculatrix, Majestic Force, Bite That and theflyingking at Wexford together with Diplomatic Ash, Continuance and Edward Sexton at Fontwell.

Paul said: "I got Gringo, who is a Mexican breed, five years ago for a bit of company after my wife passed away.

"Now I go to Betfred virtually every day which is a hobby for me putting on tiny stakes but a big treat for Gringo where the women behind the counter love to fuss him.

"Everyone knows him and how he doesn't like men just the marvellous female staff. He might be only eight-inches long but he thinks he owns the shop. He wouldn't like it at all if I went to any other bookies which I wouldn't anyway."

Great grandfather Paul, who lives near the Betfred shop at Mountain Ash, near Newport in the Welsh Valleys, went on : "It is fantastic to win from just 50p. I have been a bag of nerves. I don't have any particular winning theory except I don't follow any tips!

"After sharing some of my winnings with my family, I maybe will go on holiday to somewhere like Torquay. As for Gringo well he's spoilt anyway but he'll be getting a rag doll toy to throw around!"

Betfred boss Fred Done said:

"Well done Paul you've well and truly picked my pocket proving you can win big from tiny stakes at Betfred.

"And congrats also to Gringo for getting you ensuring your owner regularly into our shop - although for obvious reasons I will be giving him a wide berth next time I'm in the Welsh Valleys."
