Wolverhampton Tips: Sennockian is the one to beat

Both Glorious Goodwood and the Galway festival are taking place this week, making it a particularly busy time for the sport.
The Racing League continues at Wolverhampton on Thursday and all seven races will be live on ITV4. The going description is currently standard and we have a feast of competitive handicaps to look forward to. We've had a good look at the seven-race card and picked out our three strongest fancies, which include a Charlie Johnston runner with an excellent record on the all-weather.
Wolverhampton Tips - Thursday, August 1
Wolverhampton 18:45 – Sennockian @ 13/2
Betfred are offering an extra place in this race as well as a free bet up to £10 if your horse finishes second. However, there’s a very good chance that Charlie Johnston’s SENNOCKIAN can do one better here.
The son of No Nay Never has an impeccable record on the all-weather, winning three times and finishing second twice in just six starts on artificial surfaces.
He returned to form with a good second at Newcastle last week and is due to go 1lb as a result. This means now is a good time to catch him and a big run could well be on the cards.
A course-and-distance winner in the past, Johnston’s three-year-old scored off just a 2lb lower mark back in February and was second off 81 next time, which is 2lb higher than his current mark. All looks set fair and he’s entitled to at least make the frame once again.
Wolverhampton 19:45 – Endless Power @ 14/1
This is certainly a competitive-looking event and the one that stands out here is James Tate’s ENDLESS POWER, who remains lightly raced. The son of Fastnet Rock has only had seven starts thus far and just four of those have come in handicap company.
He took a big step forward on his third start to win a Chelmsford maiden in July 2023 and several subsequent winners have come out of the race. His first handicap success came over course-and-distance in February and he followed that up with victory over a mile at Southwell.
Tate’s four-year-old didn’t look quite as sharp as usual when below-par at Chelmsford last month but he deserves another chance, as that was his first start after a short break.
A return to winning ways can’t be ruled out and he’s lightly raced enough to suggest that there could be more improvement in the tank.
Wolverhampton 17:45 – Havana Rum @ 8/1
HAVANA RUM has been progressive this year and Richard Fahey’s four-year-old was a good winner at Pontefract when last seen. Things didn’t exactly go to plan at the start of the race that day either and he did well to win under the circumstances.
That was a career best effort so it could be worth giving him a go despite a 4lb rise in the weights. It’s also worth noting that he has a 50 per cent record on the all-weather, winning one of his two starts on artificial surfaces.
The yard has had eight winners in the last fortnight and Havana Rum appears to have every chance of adding to that tally.
