What Time is the Grand National?

It's the question on many a lip - and the straightforward answer is 16:00, on Saturday, April 5.

Trivia corner - April the Fifth was a big, gorgeous colt who won the Epsom Derby nearly one hundred years ago, and in his later years was a successful sire of National Hunt horses.

Enough already - let's take a look at what's on offer on Saturday quite apart from arguably the most famous and eagerly-anticipated horse race anywhere on the planet.

The card kicks in at 13:20 with an ultra-competitive handicap hurdle, and at 13:55 it's the turn of Grade 1 four-year-old novices. At 14:30 there's a staying handicap chase, with the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle at 15:05 preceding the big one.

Then it's time - 16:00, for the Randox Grand National Handicap. It's been enchanting racing fans and indeed the general public all over the globe since 1839.

First winner? Appropriately, given the magnitude of the challenge, a horse called Lottery. Sometimes history just gets it spot on.

In 2025 we're hoping that last year's hero I Am Maximus is raring to go in his quest to join the likes of Red Rum and Tiger Roll as a potential back-to-back winner, while respecting that he's got a revised handicap mark of 167 to overcome (from last year's 159) if he's to join those aforementioned immortals.

After all the excitement of the National, there are still two more contests to enjoy - a Grade 1 novice chase at 17:00, and then what is always a red-hot bumper, a National Hunt flat race, to close proceedings at 17:35.

If you're having as flutter, the very best of luck - and as always take care, and enjoy.
